Fire departments across the United States are switching to newer, safer alternatives to traditional firefighters of the past. Made in Georgia, Soyfoam™ has no PFA and is biodegradable. Forms containing PFA have been used for years in combating fires. These forms are effective for firefighting, but are also harmful to people and the environment. Polyfluoroalkyl substances known as PFAS are chemicals that contaminate many communities in the United States. PFA is used in a wide range of products, including nonstick cooking utensils, hydration utensils, broken fabrics, and fire foam because it has the properties of repelling oil and water, repelling water, reducing friction, and resisting temperature changes. PFA leaks, is used, used, disposed of, or spills into the environment. PFAS exposure is associated with many negative effects, including specific cancers, thyroid dysfunction, changes in cholesterol, and slight reductions in birth weight.
Cost-effective, environmentally friendly solution
The Cross Plains Solutions mission is to create effective firefighting forms that are safe for firefighters, first responders, military personnel and our environment. Cross Plains Solutions introduced its products commercially in 2024. Soyfoam™ TF-1122 is a wetting/suffocating agent that can eliminate Class A forest materials and Class B carbon carbon fuel source fires. There are no special handling requirements. This product is designed to work with traditional foam concentrate dispensing devices. The foam concentrate also does not have detectable fluorine (less than a billionth of parts). This product contains ingredients grown by US farmers and is certified biodegradable. US Soy Farms support the testing and development of this product through Soy Check-off and the United Soy Commission. Soyfoam™ is the first and only firefighting form that meets the requirements for achieving a Greenscreen Certified Gold™ level recognition level with clean production actions.
Many of the fire stations currently using Soyfoam™ are located in rural America. In these rural areas, many farmers are also volunteer firefighters in the community. This is an advantage for both parties as they see the benefits of growing soybeans and using safer fireform products. This foam also helps reduce water usage. This is especially useful in rural areas. Soyfoam™ is also used in metropolitan areas such as Cobb County in Georgia, Georgia, neighboring counties in Atlanta, Georgia, and Boone County in Columbia, Missouri. The first fire station to begin using Soyfoam™ was in Coridon, Kentucky. Soyfoam™ is available to charge a 2.5-gallon fire extinguisher canister in 5 gallon pale, 55 gallon drums, 250 gallon totes and 8 oz bottles.
Cross Plains Solutions continues research into future versions of Soyfoam™ to meet stringent requirements such as military specifications, US Forestry Services and more.
Cross Plains Solutions attends many events each year. These include large-scale practices such as the FDIC (Fire Station Instructors Meeting) in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the Fire Rescue International, which will be held in Orlando, Florida in 2025. Cross Plains Solutions will also attend smaller fire department meetings and demonstrate their products to local fire departments across the United States.
