Northern Ireland’s science and technology projects in major future industries, such as cybersecurity, are set to increase by at least £30 million from the UK’s industrial strategy.

The funds, provided as part of the UK government’s modern industrial strategy, are based on successful pilots from other parts of the UK that have attracted more than £140 million in private investment and created hundreds of jobs to date.

The funding could support Northern Ireland’s thriving cybersecurity sector. This has 100 businesses and 2,750 jobs.

Industry Minister Sarah Jones visited Belfast today to celebrate the news and the recent victory for the city, which has submitted its government change plans to increase economic growth and jobs.

The news confirmed the UK government’s funding for the Cybersecurity AI Tech Hub at Queens University Belfast in June, helping Northern Ireland lead cutting edge technology to keep the UK safe.

How UK Industrial Strategy Supports Top Northern Ireland Organizations

Northern Ireland’s fastest growing sector is driven by a broader support package from the UK’s industrial strategy, from advanced manufacturing to creative industries.

This includes defense, cybersecurity and aerospace companies Thales. It was recently awarded a British government support and a £1.6 billion missile contract to protect Ukraine, creating 200 new jobs and supporting existing jobs with 700 highly skilled.

Industry Minister Sarah Jones visited Ion Technology to see previous developments in the development of rare earth magnetic recycling processes to support the UK’s transition to electric vehicles following a £11 million grant from the government in June.

She also visited Haaland & Wolf’s iconic Belfast shipyard to discuss the latest information on her commitment to investing in Northern Ireland and the opportunities to work together to provide local growth and investment through the UK’s industrial strategy.

She commented: “From defence and cyber to creative industries, Northern Ireland’s economy has great strengths, so I’m talking to the business in Belfast about how modern industrial strategies can help local people grow and payroll.”

Increased investment in Northern Ireland’s future

Government commitment to Northern Ireland’s future success has increased significantly.

Earlier this month, the Prime Minister visited Belfast to confirm £310 million in funding, including more than £25 million and £137 million from the world-class virtual production studio Studio Ulster, working on paramilitary organizations and creating safer streets.

Additionally, designing a bespoke investment zone for Northern Ireland, which will be offered with executives, is underway.

Made in the UK and sold worldwide

The UK’s Industrial Strategy investment and the Minister’s visit will be followed by the Belfast Roadshow in September this year, entitled “Made in the UK.”

Here, companies have the opportunity to meet with relevant international creative buyers and sector/market experts of overseas embassies and consulates.

There are also peer learning sessions, workshops focused on international markets, international strategy development, networking opportunities, and exciting and informative seminar programs.

It shines a spotlight on the city’s creative sector and hosts 18 market experts around the world, including the US, Germany and the United Arab Emirates.
