Social networking startup Bluesky rolls out one of the most demanding features for users. No, it’s not an edit button. – Bookmarks.
The company announced a new addition on Monday, called Saved Posts. This feature provides access to the new bookmark icon below each post, next to your heart.
Saved posts can be viewed at any time from the new “Save” section of the app’s main navigation.
Like social apps as they both provide a way to mark posts that you will refer to later! Having both and bookmarks may seem redundant, but bookmarks offer a private alternative to “likes.” BlueSky’s account and related data are publicly available. In other words, what you like is also publicly available. It doesn’t work for everyone, as some of the things you save are personal or simply not the kind of things you want to publicly promote.
For example, journalists may save posts they are aiming to refer to later, but they don’t necessarily want to broadcast that they are just starting to look for something. Others may just want to bookmark their favorite adult content.
On X, Elon Musk is like! Last year, we realized that the public nature of the company could actually reduce engagement, and users liked it! I urged him to hide it. According to X employees at the time, public preferences can encourage wrong behavior because people could discourage them from preferring content that could be “edgy” or protecting public images.
AT protocols that enhance Bluesky and other small social apps do not support private data yet, so users like! There is no way to hide it. Instead, the company has built a way to save the user’s bookmarks off protocol for the time being. Things can change as protocols evolve to support private data.
In the meantime, adding posts saved to Bluesky can encourage users to become more involved with content on the platform, and also provides a way to look back at a curated collection of posts that you want to look at later, not everything that’s whimsical when you scroll through your feed. It also now offers an alternative to reply to posts with that red pushpin emoji as a workaround for many Bluesky users to save posts that return. (There’s even a nice little migration tool for those who have used this method.)
This addition follows a recent update to the Bluesky app that was unfolded a few days ago, and offers a button that provides both photo and video uploads, a tool that provides feedback to custom feed creators, and a way to add it to Starter Park (a pack of recommended people that anyone can create).
