Norit Activated Carbon (Norit), a global leader in purification technology, has reached a major milestone in its global battle with Forever Chemicals.

NORT has confirmed that its advanced thermal reactivation process consistently provides 99.98% PFA destruction with spent granular activated carbon (GAC) used in urban water treatment.

The achievements certified under NSF/ANSI 61 at both Virgin and Reactive Gacs at Oklahoma facility Norit’s Plyer highlight the company’s dedication to safe, sustainable, and round water treatment solutions.

Commenting on the landmark’s achievements, Walter Kramer, Vice President of Global Operations at Norit, said:

“This gives us confidence in water treatment utilities for proven certified solutions that meet today’s regulations, supported by a robust global reactivation network.”

What is PFA and why are they concerned?

Human chemicals (PFAS) have been widely used in products such as non-stick cooking utensils, waterproof clothing and fire-fighting foam since the 1940s, are a group of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs).

Known as Forever Chemicals, PFA does not break naturally and can last for decades in the environment and human body.

Research links PFA exposure to health risks including immune system suppression, liver damage and certain cancers.

As regulators tightened drinking water standards around the world, effective PFA disruption has become an urgent priority.

Global Network for Sustainable Revitalization

Norit operates revitalization facilities in Oklahoma, Italy, the Netherlands and Singapore.

This international footprint ensures local government regional optimization, reliable supply chains and consistent quality.

Norit restores carbon performance while reducing environmental waste by reviving it, rather than discarding it in landfills.

Brandon Hamilton, general manager of drinking water at Norit, added:

“This milestone reflects our continued investment in safe, proven solutions that protect both public health and the environment.”

Cycling solutions for the future

With over 100 years of expertise in cleanup technologies, Norit continues to provide pioneering solutions to meet evolving environmental and public health needs.

Its reactivation programme provides municipalities with a cost-effective, certified alternative to single-use carbon, while addressing one of the most pressing water safety challenges of today, one of the complete and verifiable destruction of PFAS contaminants.
