According to the French government, Apple has notified many individuals that their devices are being targeted in spyware campaigns.

France’s National Cybersecurity Response Force said Thursday it was aware that on September 3, Apple sent new notifications to affected customers whose Apple devices may have been hacked.

The Cybersecurity unit said receiving threat notifications means that at least one of the devices linked to a customer’s iCloud account is “targeted and potentially damaged.”

It is unknown how many individuals, including France, received the September 3rd threat notification when spyware was used, and when the intrusion began.

An Apple spokesman did not immediately respond to TechCrunch inquiries.

Apple regularly notifies victims that their devices are being targeted and advises them to seek assistance from Access Now’s digital security lab. More recently, Apple has notified victims of mercenary spyware attacks in Iran, Europe, India and dozens of other countries.

French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly switched phones in 2021 after his phone targeted NSO group Pegasus spyware.
