At Amazon’s Fall Hardware event on Tuesday, the company announced its latest Kindle Scribe and its first coloured Kindle Scribe. Both are now available with new AI features.

The new Kindle Scribe has a larger 11-inch glare-free display, only 5.4mm thick, weighing just 400g. Also, when you write or turn pages, it’s 40% faster. It features new textured glass to improve friction when the pen slides across the screen, which feels like it’s written on paper, according to Amazon.

The device also features a new quad-core chip, more memory and the company’s latest oxide display technology, making everything smoother.

There are two versions of the Kindle Scribe. One has a front light system and the other does not. The Kindle Scribe with a front light will be available in the US from $499.99 later this year. The version without the front light will be available for $429.99 early next year.

As for the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, Amazon says it has display technology that creates colors that don’t hurt your eyes, like LCD displays. The company has also developed a new rendering engine that enhances color and ensures that writing is fast and natural. Additionally, the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft offers several weeks of battery life, Amazon says.

Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is available starting at $629.99.

The device features a new home experience that allows users to write down something and open recently opened books, documents and notebooks. Amazon predicts both devices used for handwritten notes, and the devices include key product integrations to enhance their experience. One feature allows users to search notes across notebooks and get a simple AI summary. Next year, users will be able to send notes and documents to Alexa+ and have more complicated conversations about them.

Plus, Colorsoft allows artists to create smooth gradients and subtle tones using new shader tools. Users can write, draw, annotate in any of the 10 pen colors, or highlight them in any of the 5 highlighters.

The device also features new AI reading capabilities. The new “Story Previous Stories” feature allows users to keep up with the books they are currently reading. The “Ask This Book” feature allows users to emphasize the passage of text while reading the book, and get spoiler-free answers to questions such as character motives and the importance of the scene.

These features will be available in books purchased or borrowed on the Kindle iOS app later this year and on the Kindle device early next year.
