Openai enhances developer push with more powerful models with API

Openai announced a new API update on Monday’s development day, introducing the GPT-5 Pro, the latest language model, the new video generation model, the Sora 2, and a smaller, cheaper voice model.

The update was part of a series of announcements aimed at pleading developers to the OpenAI ecosystem, including the launch of agent building tools and the ability to build apps with ChatGPT.

The addition of the GPT-5 Pro could appeal to developers building applications in finance, legal and healthcare, according to Openai CEO Sam Altman.

Altman also said that voice capabilities will be essential in the future. This will become one of the main ways people use to interact with AI. For this reason, Openai is launching the GPT-RealTime Mini, a smaller, cheaper voice model with an API that supports low-latency streaming interactions of audio and audio. The new model is 70% cheaper than Openai’s previous Advanced Voice model, but promises “the same voice quality and expressiveness.”

Finally, creators involved in Openai’s developer ecosystem can now leverage Sora 2 in previews of the API. Openai released its latest audio and video generator, Sora 2, alongside Tiktok’s competitor, Sora App, which was filled with short AI-generated videos last week. The SORA app allows users to generate videos based on themselves, friends, or prompts and share them via Tiktok-style algorithm feeds.

“[Developers] I now have access to the same model that I enhance the stunning video output of my Sora 2 with my app,” says Altman.

SORA 2 is built in the previous generation with more realistic and physically consistent scenes with synchronized sounds and greater creative controls, from detailed camera orientation to stylized visuals.

“You can use iPhone views, for example, to encourage Sora to expand to wide shots of Speauring’s films,” says Altman. “But one of the most exciting things we’ve been working on is how well this new model deals with not only speech, but also rich soundscapes, ambient audio, and the visuals with sync effects that are based on what you’re looking for.”

SORA 2 is being pitched as a concept development tool, whether it is a visual starting point for advertising based on the general atmosphere of the product or a visual starting point for Mattel designers to turn sketches into toy concepts.
