£10m grant for UK off-grid EV charging stations

The UK Government has announced £10m of funding for the development of off-grid EV charging stations to boost the uptake of electric vehicles and tackle range anxiety across the country.

This funding package aims to accelerate the development of state-of-the-art EV charging stations capable of operating without extensive grid connectivity or completely off-grid.

This initiative will change how and where drivers power their electric vehicles. In particular, the environment will change along England’s strategic road network of motorways and major A roads.

This new investment will fund advanced charging technology that combines renewable energy sources such as solar and wind with on-site battery storage systems.

The plan promises to bring ultra-fast charging capabilities to rural and remote areas where infrastructure has previously been limited, reducing reliance on costly and time-consuming grid upgrades.

Addressing grid constraints and range anxiety

The main challenge for EV deployment in the UK is the limited availability of high-power grid connections in certain areas.

This funding aims to overcome these barriers by enabling private operators to design innovative and self-reliant energy solutions.

Each supported project must provide ultra-fast charging to at least 12 EVs at a time, delivering approximately 120 to 145 miles of range in just 15 minutes. That’s enough to travel from Birmingham to York on a single charge.

For drivers, this means less worry about finding a charging point and the confidence to take longer, cleaner journeys.

The government hopes to eliminate range anxiety, one of the main psychological barriers to electric vehicle ownership, by allowing more EV charging stations to be installed along strategic routes, including in rural areas and areas with poor electricity supply.

Drivers will know they have fast and reliable charging options within reach, no matter where they travel in the UK.

Promoting private innovation and EV introduction

Private sector operators are now invited to apply for a share of the £10 million fund to develop and deploy these next generation charging solutions.

The initiative complements the Government’s broader efforts to boost the uptake of EVs, including a £650m electric vehicle grant, which has already supported more than 25,000 drivers and provided discounts of up to £3,750 on 39 eligible electric vehicle models, contributing to a 29% increase in sales this autumn.

Keir Mather, UK Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonization, added: “We are investing £10 million in cutting-edge technology to power the future of driving, to increase charging points on our motorways and major A roads.”

“Thanks to discounts of up to £3,750, more than 25,000 drivers have already switched to electric vehicles. We’re supporting British innovation, creating jobs and making it easier than ever to travel by EV.”

Building a cleaner, cheaper future for drivers

The Government is also consulting on plans to simplify regulations around the installation of home chargers, particularly for renters and residents without private driveways.

The proposed changes could cut planning costs by £250 and allow more households to drive for just 2p per mile, or just £2.50 for a trip from London to Birmingham.

Together, these initiatives represent a huge leap forward towards a sustainable transport future, ensuring the UK’s growing network of EV charging stations can keep up with rising demand and confidently lead the country into the electric age.
