Sweden is taking a major step towards a climate-neutral future with the launch of a hydrogen valley from the High Coast to the West Coast.
This large-scale EU-funded initiative aims to create regional value chains for renewable hydrogen.
This six-year project, coordinated by RISE, aims to transform Västernorrland and Western Sweden into a hub for sustainable hydrogen production, distribution and utilization.
The project, with a total budget of around 20 million euros, brings together 45 partners from industry, research institutes and the public sector.
Magnus Hallberg, head of bioeconomy at RISE, believes Sweden can be at the forefront of Europe’s hydrogen boom. “Sweden has a unique opportunity to produce hydrogen at low cost, which gives us a real competitive advantage and can strengthen Sweden and Europe’s energy independence.”
Building a local hydrogen ecosystem
Hydrogen Valley will connect the entire hydrogen value chain in the region, linking production, storage, transportation and end-use across multiple sectors.
The project aims to demonstrate a hydrogen system on a commercial scale by bringing together stakeholders from industry, research institutes and the public sector.
This collaborative approach is expected to accelerate technology maturation, reduce costs and lay the foundation for a scalable solution that can be replicated across Europe.
Favorable conditions for hydrogen production in Sweden
Sweden is in a unique position to lead the transition to hydrogen. With rich renewable energy resources, established industrial clusters and a vibrant innovation ecosystem, the country offers ideal conditions to produce green hydrogen competitively.
The project aims to produce at least 4,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen by 2030 and will strengthen Sweden’s role as a key player in Europe’s clean energy transition.
European cooperation and knowledge exchange
The hydrogen valley concept is not limited to Sweden. By collaborating with partners from Spain, Greece and Germany, the project will foster cross-border knowledge sharing and exchange of experiences.
This cooperation will strengthen the possibility of replication and ensure that successful hydrogen solutions developed in Sweden can also be applied to other European regions.
Promoting energy independence and climate goals
The Hydrogen Valley, from the High Coast to the West Coast, is in line with the EU’s Hydrogen Strategy and wider goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
The project will contribute to a more resilient and energy-independent Europe by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
The initiative’s integrated approach – from industrial applications and transport to electronic fuel production – will ensure that the benefits of hydrogen reach multiple sectors and strengthen the EU’s competitiveness in clean energy technologies.
Over the next six years, the High Coast to West Coast Hydrogen Valley will not only demonstrate the feasibility of hydrogen at commercial scale, but also pave the way for a new European hydrogen economy that drives innovation, sustainability and economic growth.
