Cambiotics has raised $4.76 million in its first clinical trial for a probiotic supplement designed to permanently rid the body of chemicals and bring it back to life.

This initial funding will accelerate clinical trials in the US and allow the company to launch its probiotic supplement later this year.

The supplement, known as 46&, will initially target groups at high risk of exposure, particularly firefighters who face elevated PFAS levels due to the presence of the chemicals in firefighting foam and fireproof gear.

Collaborative Fund investor Matt Kaufman commented, “Cambiotics is one of the first companies to build a real path to removing PFAS from the body, and we couldn’t be more excited to support them.”

The ever-increasing danger of chemicals

Forever chemicals are in everything from nonstick cookware to the drinking water of more than 172 million Americans.

These are nicknamed “eternal chemicals” because they do not easily break down in the environment or the human body.

According to the EPA, PFAS are present in water, air, fish, and soil around the world, and scientific studies have linked exposure to certain PFAS with harmful health effects.

Several initiatives are underway. EPA recently announced that it will prioritize expanding PFAS testing, revising compliance schedules for new drinking water standards, and increasing funding for community water system upgrades.

“PFAS exposure is a large and growing problem. These chemicals are ubiquitous, remain in our bodies for years, and almost everyone already has a measurable burden,” Kaufman said.

How probiotic supplements help flush chemicals out of the body

The idea behind probiotic supplements is that certain gut bacteria can naturally absorb PFAS and help the body excrete them.

The pilot study found that certain bacterial strains can bioaccumulate PFAS in the gastrointestinal tract, effectively trapping the chemicals as they pass through the intestines and excreting them from the body through digestion.

The product, marketed as a probiotic, contains two strains, 46-XY1 and 46-SL1, both of which are said to be natural, non-GMO, and free of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) markers.

Cambiotics has partnered with Quest Diagnostics to provide access to a PFAS blood test panel, allowing consumers to measure PFAS levels in their blood.

The company is also targeting early adopters in the biohacker and health optimization communities. The waiting list is already open.
