It’s a long time ago, but it’s true, Celine Dion will forever miss her friend Peabo Bryson, who died of a stroke on Tuesday (June 2).

Dion paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary singer, with whom she recorded “Beauty and the Beast” decades ago, writing on her Instagram Story: “Heartbroken to hear of the loss of Peabo Bryson today.”

“His amazing voice and kind spirit epitomized the beauty of singing and performing,” she continued in text over an old photo of herself and Bryson sitting on the red carpet at the American Music Awards. “He has been so wonderful and generous to me over the years… He made me feel so at ease when I was just learning to sing in English. He will always remain for me as a true symbol of the joy that music has brought to my life.”

“His voice and talent will be sorely missed,” Dion added. “My heart is with your family. May you rest in peace, Peebo.”

Bryson’s representative confirmed to Billboard on the day of his death that he suffered a stroke over the weekend and died at the age of 75. He leaves behind a wife and children.

Dion was only 23 when she sang “Beauty and the Beast” with Bryson in Disney’s animated film of the same name. In 1992, the duet reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the late R&B singer a total of 12 song entries throughout his career.

After Bryson’s death, his family said in a statement: “We have been so touched by the outpouring of love, prayers and support from our fans, friends and colleagues around the world.” “Our hearts are broken, but we are comforted by knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives were touched by his voice and generous spirit.”

Dion is currently preparing for his comeback residency, which begins in September at La Défense Arena in Paris. Her first single in seven years, “Dansons,” was released in April.
