When the Emmy nominations were announced Wednesday, Pitt led all nominees with 25 points in his dominant sophomore season, while Hux threw a graduation party with a record-setting 24 points in his final season, leading all comedies.
This total gives HBO Max the top spot in both drama and comedy, with Hux breaking the record for most nominations for a comedy series set by The Studio last year.
Emmy voters love shows that are leaving, and have loved Hacks since its first season for its comedic depiction of generational tension. As these two phenomena collided, my grades as a fifth grader skyrocketed. Star Jean Smart has won Best Actress in a Comedy for each of the past four seasons, and it would be surprising if she doesn’t win a fifth season in September.
Her sidekick throughout the series, Hannah Einbinder, broke out last year and won her fourth supporting actress nomination in a comedy, while her castmate and show co-creator Paul W. Downs also won his fifth Wednesday.
Last year, the new actor won major awards for his work on the series “The Pit,” which depicts daily life in an emergency room, including Best Drama Series, Best Actor for Noah Wyle, and Best Supporting Actress for Katherine LaNasa.

Already a beloved veteran show, it dominated the acting category this year. Mr. Wiley was nominated again, as was Mr. LaNasa. Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif, and Sepideh Moafi were also nominated, and The Pitt won four of the seven supporting actress spots.
Three of their castmates were nominated for Best Supporting Actor: Patrick Ball, Sean Hatosy, and Jaelan Howell.
While major Emmy nominees, such as 2025 top drama nominee Severance, tend to take years off between seasons, The Pit quickly returned for another round. It’s part of an innovative model that marries classic network trends with modern streaming prestige. And its claim in the acting category has been helped by White Lotus’ season-to-season absence, where the ensemble has shown similar dominance.
AppleTV+’s two new shows, “Pluribus,” a drama about one woman and the collective consciousness, and “Widow’s Bay,” a horror comedy, both received big scores in their first seasons.
“Pluribus,” from “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” creator Vince Gilligan, received 18 nods. The drama’s Best Actress award included Rhea Seehorn, the only lead actress considered to be a favorite to win the category.
“Widow’s Bay” received a score of 19, second only to Hux among comedy films, and Matthew Rhys was nominated for Best Actor. Two other AppleTV+ shows won best comedy, Margo’s Got Money Trouble and The Shrinking, whose stars Elle Fanning and Michelle Pfeiffer were also nominated for acting awards.

Apple has been winning in recent years in the top comedy category, with big wins for Ted Lasso and The Studio, which won a record 13 Emmys last year. This year, his absence leaves Hux and Widow’s Bay wide open.
Nominations for The Shrinking included Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Harrison Ford. Prognosticators say Ford’s momentum is strong, with many saying this will be the year the Hollywood legend finally wins an EGOT-level award after a storied career. His castmate Jason Segel was nominated for lead actor for the show about a boundary-crossing therapist.
Netflix’s “Beef” topped the limited series or anthology series category with 16 nominations. Beef had a dominating first season in 2023, with Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac and Charles Melton, the anthology’s all-new grudge bearers, all scoring nominations.
Three HBO Max shows were nominated for the top prize of best drama series. Knights of the Seven Kingdoms and Pit. Apple has developed three of its own: Slow Horses, Your Friends & Neighbors, and Pluribus.
Euphoria returned to the Emmy Awards after a long hiatus and was nominated for seven awards. Zendaya, who won Best Actress in a Drama for the first two seasons in 2020 and 2022, will be appearing in the recently aired third season.
Recent winners Riza Colon-Zayas and Jeff Hiller announced the nominees at the Television Academy in Los Angeles. The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, broadcast on NBC, will be held on September 14 at the Peacock Theater, the longtime home of the Emmy Awards and soon to be the home of the Oscars. Mariska Hargitay has been one of NBC’s standard-bearers for decades as the star of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and the host of the documentary “My Mama Jane,” which received double nominations for director and producer.
