The UK auto industry is gearing up for a transformative decade as its major employers are committed to key skill drives to support the electric vehicle (EV) revolution.

The UK automobile sector will increase apprenticeships by nearly 16% in 2025, according to a new survey by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The initiative is consistent with the industry’s ambitious green growth agenda, ensuring that a skilled workforce is ready to drive the next generation of zero-emission vehicles.

In earnest in the National Apprentice Week of 2025, the spotlight is firmly present in dynamic opportunities within the automotive industry.

Over the past two years, over £200 billion has been invested in the UK’s EV transition, with a surge in demand for highly trained professionals skilled in cutting-edge technology.

Mike Hawes, CEO of SMMT, explained: “The UK’s automotive sector is now in the cusp of ’10 years of green growth’, where billions of people have been invested in EVS and, importantly, a new generation of talent to design, build and maintain them. there is.

“There is no doubt that automobiles are one of the most exciting industries in the world. As we seek growth, we need new skills apprentices to grow with us. What is our promise? It’s been a high salary and a rewarding career for the past year.”

Increased demand for skilled workers

The UK’s shift towards a sustainable automobile future is already reflected in the rising number of apprentices.

Over 550 new apprentices have joined the sector in this grade alone, with 740 more arrangements still available.

This trend paves the way for long-term, well-paid careers across the UK following a marked increase of 40.8%, which begins new apprenticeships in 2023.

Opportunities range from research and development to manufacturing, supply chain logistics, and vehicle maintenance.

Most in-demand roles include battery and power electronics design and development engineers, EV engineers and experts.

These positions are essential to maintaining the growth of the industry, with over 180 zero-emission vehicle models already available in the UK, including cars, vans, trucks and buses scheduled for launch in 2025.

Competition for an environmentally friendly future

As the UK accelerates its transition to electric mobility, it is paramount to ensuring continuous progress from a skilled workforce.

Apprentice training programs need to evolve to incorporate the latest vehicle technology that covers everything from designing and manufacturing of EVs to testing, maintenance and repairs. The need for continuous upskills makes skill transition a top priority for the industry.

To address this challenge, the launch of English skills and new growth & skills taxation aims to improve access to automotive training and to improve access to businesses of all sizes across the UK.

These initiatives are expected to enhance the capacity of the workforce and strengthen the country’s position as a global leader in electric vehicle innovation.

Investing in the auto workforce

One of the most important factors in the UK’s EV transition is ensuring that the workforce is not only growing, but is evolving to meet the technological advances of the sector.

Top auto employers are taking important steps to close the skills gap, recognizing that a well-trained workforce is the backbone of sustainable growth.

By investing in advanced training programs, businesses are preparing employees to handle the complexities of EV production, including battery technology, software integration, and energy efficiency solutions.

This investment is important in maintaining competitiveness in the UK global automotive market as the industry moves from traditional internal combustion engines to cleaner, smarter alternatives.

With the UK government and industry leaders prioritizing green growth, now is the perfect time for experts to enter the automotive sector.
