Huawei is making Trifold Phone global just six months after its successful Chinese debut. On Tuesday, the company announced the international launch of The Mate XT, priced at 3,499 euros ($3,660) as part of a push to retrieve ground in overseas markets after years of US sanctions.

Huawei does not specify which countries will acquire the device, although local announcements are expected. However, CNBC reported that it found a list of phone calls in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

First released in China in September 2023, Mate XT created waves as the world’s first three mobile phones. Unlike traditional folding phones that bend once, this device folds at two points and offers the option for the user to use one, two or all three screens. Huawei introduced the phone in its video campaign just before the launch of Apple’s iPhone 16. Mate XT adopted more than 2.7 million pre-orders within hours of its launch in China in September 2024.

Huawei was once the global top smartphone brand, heading straight to Apple and Samsung. The momentum halted in 2019 when US sanctions blocked access to advanced chips and Google’s Android systems, causing international market share to plummet. According to IDC, Huawei currently holds just 0.3% of the global smartphone market outside of China, CNBC reports.

In Japan, the story is different. Huawei’s market share in China has risen from 12% in 2023 to 17% this year, following the surprising release of mobile phones with advanced chips last year. US sanctions were caught by many as they were designed to curb China’s access to high-end semiconductor technology.

Now, Huawei wants to replicate its success with premium devices like The Mate XT.

“I wonder what they are [Huawei] TRIFOLD can be a unique value proposition and it is very expensive so they target wealthy individuals who are eager to show off that they have the best experience you can get We aim to do this.” IDC data and analysis. He added that even if they sell 500,000 units, it could generate revenue of $1.5 billion.

However, Huawei faces a major challenge: the lack of Google services. While most Android users can easily download popular apps from the Google Play Store, Huawei’s Appgallery lacks many of these familiar options, limiting the appeal of non-Chinese phones It may be.

Huawei’s challenges are also reflected by Neil Shah, a partner at Counterpoint Research.

“The lack of Google is still a ‘hole of gaps’ for the mainstream international market. Especially those who pay the best dollars for triple hardware but want to run the Netflix or Google Play Store or the latest latest Genai Google Gemini features,” he told CNBC

Despite the expensive prices, Huawei stores are already seeing a long line of enthusiastic buyers.

According to Canalys, Apple dropped out of China’s top five smartphone vendors in the second quarter. This was the first time a domestic brand had met all five spots. Huawei has secured the fourth position with 10.6 million smartphones shipped. Apple had shipped 10 million phones in the first quarter. Huawei and its Chinese competitors offer foldable and flip phones, but Apple is not yet in these segments.
