Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok 3 surged to the top of Apple’s App Store, surpassing Openai’s ChatGpt. The milestone comes just three days after Xai unveils the latest version of Grok. This is what Musk calls “the smartest AI on the planet.”
As of this morning, Grok is the most downloaded free app in the US and outperforms its competitors in the AI chatbot space. Following the release of Grok 3, Surge introduces advanced inference (Think Mode) and Deep Search, pushing apps before their rivals.
Elon Musk’s Xai Grok 3 AI ChatbotTOPS Apple’s App Store, dethrones chatgpt
The App Store rankings show Grok 3 overtakes ChatGpt to take the top spot, with Google Gemini and Deepseek sitting in third and fifth place respectively. Musk previously emphasized that pre-training on the Grok 3 uses 10 times the computing power of its predecessor, setting the stage for a rapid rise.
This latest shakeup in AI rankings is telling the growth of the competition in the chatbot market where companies compete to improve their models and attract user attention.
Musk and Zai Team launched Grok 3 on February 17 at 8pm (11pm Eastern) and it was the first time they saw what Musk described as “the smartest AI on the planet.” In a demo posted to X, Grok 3 showed impressive results in math, science and coding benchmarks, and competitors in key performance tests from competitors such as the Kemini-2 Pro, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and GPT-4o It surpassed.
The primary Grok 3 model is gradually being deployed via the Grok app, but the smaller “Grok 3 Mini” version offers faster response times.
Both models secured the top spots on the AIME’24, GPQA, and LiveCodebench leaderboards, with the Grok 3 landing in the number one position at Chatbot Arena. It also comes with a “inference” variation designed to solve problems through more analytical thinking, similar to Openai’s O3-Mini and Deepseek R1.
The Training Grok 3 takes 10 times more computing power than its predecessor, the Grok 2, and Xai relies on the Colossus SuperComputer, a system equipped with 200,000 H100 GPUs.
Why is it important?
The success of Grok 3 is Xai, just two years ago, as a key contender for the AI space. Still, the competition is not standing still. Openai is preparing to release GPT-4.5, and ultimately released GPT-5. Meanwhile, humanity, Deepmind and Chinese tech giants like Alibaba and Deepseek are all working to secure a share in the AI market. The race gets hotter, and the Glock 3’s rapid rise is just the beginning.
According to Xai, Grok 3 was trained with synthetic data, but Musk says it will help you get back to your own work to find and fix the mistakes. This self-correcting behavior can give you an advantage over other models, and can result in double the error.
You can access Grok 3 through Musk’s social platform X, previously known as Twitter, and possibly through its own app. Xai is pushing to establish itself in the busy AI market, and Grok 3 is a big part of that strategy.
Behind the scenes, Xai reportedly is trying to raise $10 billion, which will result in a valuation of around $75 billion. The plan is to use that money to increase the capacity of the data center and improve the AI model. Musk revealed that Xai is not just here. His goal is to build AI tools that focus on truth and transparency apart from competitors such as Openai and Google.
Late last year, Xai closed its massive $6 billion Series C funding round. This latest investment includes well-known names such as A16Z, BlackRock, Fidelity Management & Research Company.
With tonight’s demonstrations happening, expectations are high. Does Grok 3 respond to the hype and prove that it’s more than just a big story? You’ll understand immediately.
Musk founded Xai in 2023 and later introduced Grok as a direct challenger to Openai’s ChatGpt.
