The bus carrying 49 people after a brake breakdown was overturned, and 23 other people were injured, officials say.

Police say at least 18 people have been killed and 23 injured in eastern Thailand after a tour bus rolled upside down.

“It was a downhill road, the brakes failed and the driver lost control of the vehicle before it was overturned,” Colonel Sophon Framanee said, and the person who died Wednesday was an adult on a study trip. He added that.

The police told Reuters.

In a social media post, rescue and medical workers at the scene in Prachinberg, 155km (96 miles) east of the capital Bangkok, helped victims near the bus expose their insidiousness.

Local civil servant Somjay Puttacena said that around 20 injured passengers were taken to hospital, warning that some people remained in danger.

Prime Minister Paetontan Sinawatra expressed his sadness towards the victims’ families and said an investigation was underway.

“If we find that we are violating the use of a vehicle that does not meet the standards or is involved in reckless use of the vehicle, legal action will be taken,” she said in a post on X. .

“Vehicle inspections must be safe, pass specified standards before they can be used to prevent accidents and reduce such losses again,” she said.

Road accidents and deaths are common due to weak enforcement of vehicle safety standards and inadequate roadways.

According to a 2023 report, Southeast Asian countries ranked ninth out of 175 World Health Organization member states for road traffic deaths.

Last year, a school bus fired fire due to a gas cylinder leak, killing 23 people, including 16 students, in the country’s most fatal road accident in 10 years.
