Millions of families were able to see the fall in warm homes and energy bills as ministers retreat 10 new AI innovations that will help make the UK a clean energy superpower through the UK government’s change plan.

Ten finalists in the second round of the Manchester Awards include innovative AI innovations that can change the way the UK tackles climate change, reducing costs for working families.

Among them is a system that uses AI to design custom-made panels, convert bricks into radiators, and then convert them from the outside into a warm home, thereby maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature throughout the year. The system also simplifies the installation of heat pumps in older homes while reducing costs.

Another team will use AI-enabled drones to map heat losses across the neighborhood, helping the council to pinpoint exactly which homes require emergency insulation upgrades.

How the Manchester Awards can help improve key industries

Funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Technology, the Manchester Award, offered by Challenge Works (part of the NESTA Group), will reward UK-led AI innovations that support public goods that contribute to economic growth, improving public services and a fair transition to net zero.

Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, explained:

“This includes using this technology to keep your home warm and also supporting projects using AI to reduce carbon emissions in the cement and steel industry.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband added: “Clean power is an economic opportunity for the 21st century, and these projects will help families and businesses use the lower bills in smarter and faster ways than ever before.

“From specially designed radiator walls to smart power grids that flick on and off when needed, AI could help every home in the UK feel the benefits of warm homes and homemade clean energy.”

Training and scaling new AI innovations

The ten teams behind Advanced AI Innovations received £100,000 in seed funds each, plus £60,000 worth of calculation credits to help train and expand the model.

They will also benefit from non-financial support, including investor preparation guidance and access to a network of experts, and will position them to succeed in pursuing the £1 million grand prize in spring 2026.

The winning solution demonstrates not only technical innovation, but also a roadmap for short-term adoption, scale and impact.

These finalists will follow in Polaron’s footsteps. It is the first Manchester Award recipient to accelerate the development of advanced materials used in all aspects of life, from wind turbines to electric batteries.

The winning innovation will be announced early next year and will receive the £1 million grand prize to bring cutting-edge ideas to life.

Construction in the UK’s AI breakthrough

These innovations are based on the AI Opportunity Action Plan, the UK government’s blueprint to accelerate the use of AI across the economy.

By leveraging these cutting-edge solutions, AI is driving industry breakthroughs, transforming public services and improving the lives of citizens around the country.
