Anthropic has become the latest artificial intelligence (AI) company to announce a new suite of features that will give users of its Claude platform a deeper understanding of their health information.

Under an initiative called Claude for Healthcare, Claude Pro and Max plan subscribers in the U.S. can choose to give Claude secure access to their test results and health records by connecting to HealthEx and Function, and the Apple Health and Android Health Connect integration will roll out through iOS and Android apps later this week, the company said.

“Once connected, Claude can summarize a user’s medical history, explain test results in plain language, detect patterns across fitness and health metrics, and prepare questions for appointments,” Antropic said. “The goal is to make patient-doctor conversations more productive and help users stay informed about their health.”

cyber security

This development comes just days after OpenAI announced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated experience for users to securely connect their medical records and wellness apps for personalized responses, lab insights, nutritional advice, and meal ideas.

The company also noted that the integration is private by design, allowing users to explicitly choose what kind of information they want to share with Claude and to disconnect or edit Claude’s permissions at any time. Similar to OpenAI, health data is not used to train the model.

This expansion comes amid increased scrutiny of whether AI systems can avoid providing harmful or dangerous guidance. Recently, Google took steps to remove some of its AI summaries after they were found to provide inaccurate health information. Both OpenAI and Anthropic stress that their AI products can make mistakes and are not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Anthropic notes in its Acceptable Use Policy that high-risk use cases related to medical decisions, medical diagnosis, patient care, therapy, mental health, and other medical guidance require qualified experts in the field to review the output produced “prior to distribution or final determination.”

“Claude is designed to include situational disclaimers, recognize that uncertainty, and direct users to medical professionals for personalized guidance,” Antropic said.
