Apps equipped with a growing open web, Tapestry review

A new app called Tapestry released on Tuesday will collect and organize information from the web and social networks in a single place. In a sense, like this generation of FriendFeed, a long -term attempt from Web 2.0 ERA is enough to consolidate feeds and social media updates in a single destination for discovery and discussion. I remember.

However, FriendFeed encouraged the on -site discussion, built a unique social network, and finally attracted a Facebook acquisition, but TAPESTRY works better as a reader.

The problem handled by the app is that the open social web grows more commonly as it grows. In order to keep up, people need to use a large number of services and redo many apps.

In the fuss of development, including growth social networks, the growth of Bluesky and Mastodon is designed to be comparable to high -tech giants with open source software and distributed power structure, so it is now scattered in many places. There is also a challenge to catch up with friends and followers. Leave X and meta platforms.

Create this issue is the main attraction of Tapestry, which can limit the appeal of the app beyond the early recruiters.

Unified app

Today, most people already have their favorite creator’s news sites, blogs, podcasts, processes, workflows, and their favorite apps. Tapestry suggests changing it. We provide one place to check these updates along with other social networks that use these updates, such as Bluesky, Mastodon, and Tumblr.

Tapestry, TwitterRiffic, built by a team designed by one of the original third -party Twitter clients, suggests a new type of timeline, like Twitter, which is scrolled by all updates. In addition, there is an additional tool that can be used to configure the timeline -Select the content to be muted and display it as necessary during the screen space, such as “muffle” or collapse. You can.

The latter can be used to improve both the aesthetics and atmosphere of the timeline. For example, it is recommended that you muffle a political topic so that you do not overwhelm the screen when scrolling or muffling your favorite TV program.

After adding social accounts, RSS feeds, blogs, podcasts, etc., if you want to display it in TAPESTRY, you can set up a timeline and additional timeline to provide a custom view of this information. For example, you can use a timeline focusing only on Apple’s news, blogs, podcasts, or social networks such as Bluesky or Mastodon.

To make the most of Tapestry, you must consider the information you want to track, the type of update, and how they are organized. It may be noisy to display everything in a single feed by updating all social apps. Your timeline is essentially a custom feed version of the tapestry (similar to the Bluesky feed, but can be pulled out of multiple services as well as one). In other words, it means that you will work not only for consumers but also for feed creators, at least until the more robust developer ecosystem arrives.

Feed and connector

Tapestry seems to be trying to stir the itch that is possible by an open social web early adapter, but it is sometimes complicated by consolidating all content on the timeline. You may feel that some of the user interface options require more Polish words.

For example, TAPESTRY defaults to open the feed in the app if you select the “More” (3 dot) menu in each post.

Also, taking extra taps to take the ability to be involved in the original content will not make this the best app for those who want to quickly participate in social conversations during scrolling. When opening items in the app, you need to log in to the social network. It is recommended that you set this to open the feed in “Safari”, so TAPESTRY opens the related iOS app (such as Bluesky) directly.

Unfortunately, that means that Tapestry has not actually solved the need to maintain multiple accounts in multiple apps.

The choice of another design that can cause confusion includes two sections: an app that can add sources. One is called “feed”, and the other is called “connector”. The former can add “content displayed on the timeline”, and the latter aims to “create feeds that penetrate the timeline”. (If you are scratching your head with these explanations, you are not alone. The app needs to provide more explanations.)

After all, the purpose is to function like a plug -in or add -on. They are operated in the JavaScript sandbox and are built by the form of a third -party developer who wants to extend the tapestry Eco system with a unique new feed. Unfortunately, these connectors cannot include Facebook, Instagram, X, or other sources that do not provide open feeds.

The extended app is a clever idea, but it may have further raised the project roadmap. Initially, the team needs to focus on testing not only social webs but also the “timeline” to test the premise that users want to display information from the entire Web. Do you want to mix RSS, podcasts, social media, and other services instead of using individual apps?

Transformation step or future?

TAPESTRY is not just thinking about controlling users to control their feeds and sources to control news and information.

New social apps such as Bluesky and Meta have introduced the concept of custom feeds, but GRAZE -like startups provide advanced feed building tools, and Flipboard is Surf for building custom feeds from the entire service. A new app has been introduced. Unlike Tapestry, the Surf user interface allows you to display, read, and listen to filtering, reading, and listening, depending on the selected tab.

Other apps such as Feek and Reeders have appeared to deal with similar issues related to feed consumption.

One of the questions aimed at dealing with these solutions is that today’s open social network functions in various protocols. Mastodon, pixelfed, and others use ActivityPub, use Bluesky, and is built based on the basics of protocol. On the other hand, old news sites, blogs, and podcasts have been updated to the open protocol RSS.

Currently, the bridge is built to connect networks such as Bluesky and Mastodon. Social apps such as threads are integrated with ActivityPub, but newsletter platforms such as WordPress and Ghost are participating in open -minded webs, known as Fediverse via ActivityPub.

It will leave us during the transition period when you can’t choose your favorite app and you can’t expect to see it all.

Instead, a tool for combining feeds and sources is given, but is appropriate. However, some of these initiatives feel like a temporary measure because all new, open Internet, which are ultimately connected, is still being built.
