Simple facts

Name: Asian Golden Cat (Catopuma temminckii)

Where it lives: China, Nepal, Southeast Asia, Northeast India

What it eats: small mammals like birds, reptiles, rodents, big mammals like young deer

Also known as the Asian Golden Cat or Ten Mink Cat, Asian Golden Cat, is endemic in some of Asia’s dense forests. It is a wide pallet, bold enough to pick birds before eating them, and kill prey such as 35 pounds (16 kilograms), or 2-3 times the weight of a domestic cat.

Asian golden cats are elusive creatures rarely found in the wild. Images of camera traps show that the most common coat color of the species is golden brown and reddish brown, but is shaped like gray, melanism, pale cinnamon and patterned ocelots. According to the International Association of Endangered Cats (ISEC), there is no known link between the colour of the coat and the geographical distribution of Asian golden cats.

Although they prefer to hunt on the ground, Asian golden cats can also climb trees. It has a strong bite on the neck, killing larger prey, and wandering through subtropical and tropical forests at various times. Researchers have long thought that Asian golden cats are nocturne, but more recent evidence suggests that these cats have irregular patterns of activity that can peak in Twilight.

According to the 2016 Biodiversity Survey in Bhutan, the species can live at altitudes of 14,050 feet (4,282 meters) from the sea level for up to 20 years. This study, and other studies showing Asian golden cats living at very high elevations, suggest that highlands may be important habitats for species.

According to ISEC, Asian golden cats have also been found in open areas in rocky areas, and are also known as “rock cats” in parts of China. Their range is about 20% larger than the cloudy leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) range, despite the fact that the two species exhibit similar behavior and overlap in their distribution.

However, as a result of their preference for forest habitat, Asian golden cats are particularly vulnerable to deforestation, causing significant loss of species’ habitat. According to ISEC, Southeast Asian forests have the highest deforestation rate in the world due to the expansion of crops such as oil palm, coffee and rubber.

According to the ISEC, Asian golden cats are threatened by illegal hunting of fur and bone used in traditional medicine, as well as meat that is considered delicate in some areas. When Asian golden cats come into contact with livestock such as sheep and goats, predators sometimes kill peasant animals, leading to retaliation, society says.
