Nuro, an autonomous delivery startup founded by two former Google engineers, has raised fresh $106 million in funding, boosting its valuation to $6 billion, the company announced Wednesday. The Series E Round is the company’s first major pay raise in over three years.

Fresh funds are T. It comes from a combination of new and existing supporters, including RowePrice Associates, Fidelity, Tiger Global, Greylock Partners, and XN. Nuro says more strategic partners will be taking part in the round and will soon name them in a separate announcement.

The round brings Nuro’s total funding to $2.2 billion since its inception about 10 years ago. The new capital will expand Nuro’s AI-based distribution platform and deepen its commercial partnership.

Founded in 2016 by former Google engineers Dave Ferguson and Jiajun Zhu, Nuro is building an AI-powered delivery system designed to operate without a human driver. The company’s high-tech enhances everything from custom delivery bots to integrations with Robotaxis and consumer vehicles.

Jiajun Zhu, Nuro co-founder and CEO, said: “We focus on our unique placement to help our technology, our years of experience in the deployment of Driver Out Level 4 and helping automakers, mobility platforms and commercial fleets accelerate our autonomy roadmap.”

Nuro builds physical AI systems focused on automated delivery, offering products such as Level 4 Nuro Driver™ and Level 2++ Nuro Driver™ Assist. These are built to slot into a variety of vehicles, from Robotaxis to distribution vans, with the aim of eliminating the need for humans behind the wheels.

Instead of building their own consumer cars, Nuro is licensing the platform to other companies. This opens the door to integration between commercial fleets and private vehicles without building everything from scratch.

You may have seen Nuro’s name pop up with the partnership heading. In 2021, we worked with Domino to bring robot pizza delivery to parts of Houston. Instead of the driver showing up on your order, the Nuro’s R2 robot rolled up on its own. The customer received the text, tracked the delivery in real time, entered pins, opened the door and grabbed the food.

Beyond pizza, Nuro works with Chipotle and Kroger to handle groceries and meal delivery in custom built cars. These partnerships gave the company a real-world experience of moving goods without a driver in it.

Nuro says it is focused on making delivery cheaper and easier for businesses and customers as well. With the new funding, the company is set to expand its reach. This is not by building more robots themselves, but by becoming the go-to technology provider behind the autonomous fleet.
