For years, experts have warned about artificial intelligence that replaces humans. Now, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is the latest to sound alarms with the increasing use of generator AI, agent-based systems, and robotics in industries such as medicine and education.

Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on tonight’s show, Gates didn’t sugarcoat his outlook. He added that humans are no longer needed “for most things,” CNBC reported.

Gates, who carefully looks at the space, calls it a shift towards what he described as “free intelligence.” This is a new variety of riches where high-quality advice, education and services can be widely accessed through machines on behalf of people.

Ai that replaces humans

He expanded this view last month in a conversation with Professor Arthur Brooks of Harvard University. The gate, called the pace of AI development, is “it’s very deep and a little scary because it’s happening very quickly and there’s no cap.”

This is more than just a theory. The tool is already here. The AI model can now pass the AP Biology Exam, create inherited code and provide real-time medical summary. What was previously considered professional level knowledge is being handled more and more by machines.

That’s what makes this shift so uncomfortable. It’s not just that AI can write emails and summarise PDFs. Gates points out the greater confusion. This is a restructuring of the labor market where humans become optional in the sector we once envisioned.

There is disagreement about how deep this will be. Some believe that AI supports workers and makes people more productive and efficient. Others like Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of Deepmind and now co-founder of Microsoft AI CEO, have argued that tools will completely replace humans. In his book The Coming Wave, Suleyman writes:

The gate looks on both sides. He is excited that AI can do, especially for medicine, education and climate solutions. At the same time, he admits that from misinformation to work transfers, there are real concerns that cannot be ignored. In a 2023 blog post, he called these concerns “understandable and effective.”

Still, if he had been redoing today, Gates said he would build an AI startup. Speaking to CNBC in September 2024, he said: [that’s just] Some sketch ideas… I’m encouraging the young people at Microsoft in Open Lie.

In 2017, Gates had already flagged AI as the next big change. At an event with Warren Buffett, he cited Google Deepmind’s Go-Playing AI as a turning point. But even he had no hope of what would happen next.

In a recent blog post, Gates revealed that he once challenged Openai to build a model that could promote AP biotesting. He thought it would take years. “They finished it in just a few months,” he wrote. At that moment, he marked the most important leap in technology since the graphical user interface.

The gate is correct. Companies such as IBM, Salesforce and Meta are already planning to replace software engineers with AI. For example, in 2023, IBM announced plans to replace 7,800 jobs with AI and suspend employment. The company said it is expected that thousands of roles will be eliminated through AI and automation in the coming years.

This is no longer speculation. The piece has already fallen into place. Whether it’s a new opportunity or a widespread disruption depends on how the next decade unfolds and who is still in the photo.
