Concept releases AI-powered email client for Gmail

On Tuesday, Notion released Notion Mail, an AI-powered email client for Gmail that integrates with the rest of Notion’s workflow management platform.

Notion Mail connects to conceptual users’ Gmail accounts and uses AI to help users organize emails, draft responses, schedule meetings, and search across messages. Any concept user can sign up, and concept email AI features are free, with monthly usage restrictions or unlimited via paid tier.

Notion Mail falls into an increasingly crowded category of businesses looking to improve their email inboxes using AI. One of the larger players, Superhuman raises $108 million in venture funding for clients who are not bound by legacy shemale providers such as Gmail and Microsoft Outlook. Fyxer, which connects to Gmail and Outlook, raised $10 million last month.

You’ll also get many of the features that offer many concepts of features offered by providers such as Gmail, which use AI to sort emails and propose meetings.

Jason Ginsberg of Notion Mail Lead told TechCrunch that the idea behind Notion Mail is not to attach AI to an existing inbox, but rather that users can use AI to build custom, organized inboxes and configure the way they want.

“The way we built concept emails is pretty much the basis for building blocks, or the way email works,” Ginsburg said. “It’s really modular, and what it means is that you can not only go to the setting, but all the different permutations can be configured so that you can construct concept emails in ways that you can’t really imagine, not just what we’ve decided on.

The Notion Mail infrastructure comes from Skiff, the concept of an end-to-end encrypted collaboration platform that was acquired in 2024 in private totals. Ginsberg co-founded Skiff, which also includes email products.

According to Ginsberg, one of the more notable features of Notion Mail is that users can separate their inbox into “views” or folders. This feature uses concept AI to automatically view emails on a specific topic and move them to another topic-specific inbox.

Ginsberg imagines users using the ability to organize emails for specific purposes, such as tracking recruitment applications. He said he uses this feature himself to quickly check customer feedback from Notion Mail beta customers.

Concept Mail connects with other concept products, such as the platform’s calendar app, concept calendars, and its internal knowledge base. This will unlock time-saving shortcuts. If someone in the email exchange suggests schedule a meeting, Notion’s AI will check the user’s calendar, suggest that they are free, and encourage them to schedule a schedule.

Ginsberg said much of the innovations involved in incorporating AI into emails so far have focused primarily on creating emails. He believes concept emails provide something different because he focuses on building a customized inbox.

“I think our focus was really on the line. How can AI help organize your emails for you?” Ginsburg said. “The big change is that you don’t feel like the burden of going through the same endless list, One-Size-Fit-All Inbox, and manual triage emails. Our focus is not to letting you work faster in the old ways. It’s a really new way, a new approach.”

Ginsberg said in the future the concept hopes to provide more product integrations and additional ways to access concept emails, like iOS apps. The concept team also wants to be able to provide multiple inboxes in one view.
