Despite recent layoffs, meta is expanding in India

Last month, Meta announced plans to cut 5% of its employees, deeming them a controversial “low-performing person.” However, job reductions do not hinder the meta from expanding in certain geographical areas.

Meta is setting up a new site in Bengaluru’s high-tech hub (formerly known as Bangalore), which is a multi-meta employee featured on LinkedIn this month.

Meta currently employs 41 positions there, most of which were posted last month, according to its career webpage. The positions are divided into software or machine learning engineer jobs, with roles focusing on the design of chips in the meta data center.

Meta Bengaluru is looking for an experienced engineering director who will build and lead the Indian engineering team, one of Meta’s work ads posted on LinkedIn three weeks ago.

The engineering director of Bengaluru will be responsible for designing strategies to hire and build the founding engineering team, and will also help to create a “vision of the Indian engineering team.”

According to Meta Employee’s LinkedIn Post, the new center is part of Meta’s enterprise engineering team. The team focuses on custom internal meta tools rather than the most well-known products of the meta, such as Facebook and Instagram.

Meta has several existing offices in India, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, New Delhi and Mumbai, but most have few job openings and are primarily non-engineering roles. According to Meta’s career page, only one of the 12 positions available elsewhere is engineering-related.

An Indian metaspokesman told TechCrunch that it is recruiting “a small number of engineering positions in Bengaluru.”

“We regularly update our location strategies to support long-term investments,” the spokesman said.

The 41 positions in Bangalore are only a small portion of Meta’s global job postings, currently exceeding 1,700. However, it represents a meta shift that traditionally did not use India as an engineering hub. These positions have historically been based in North America and Europe.

In one example of 2022, an Indian software engineer made the headline after being fired by Meta just two days after moving to Canada.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he intends to fill in the jobs Meta cut back during its latest layoffs.
