Billionaire Elon Musk has just been countered by Openai, but that doesn’t stop his AI company Xai from becoming available via APIs.
It’s been several months since Xai unveiled the Grok 3. The Grok3 is the company’s response to models such as Openai’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini. Grok 3 analyzes images to respond to questions, and is not so iconic by Xai in March.
Xai offers two flavors, the flagship model, via the APIs: Grok 3 and Grok 3 Mini, with “inference” features.
The Grok 3 costs $3 (approximately 750,000 words) per million dollars supplied to the model and $15 per million dollars generated by the model. Meanwhile, the Grok 3 Mini costs $0.30 per input token and $0.50 per million.
The faster versions of GROK 3 and GROK 3 MINI are available at premium. GROK3’s output tokens of $5 per million and $25 per million. $0.60 per million and $4 per million output tokens for the Grok 3 Mini.
The Grok 3 is not cheaper than the competition. Xai matches Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet pricing. It also provides inference functionality, but is more expensive than Google’s recently released Gemini 2.5 Pro. (In particular, Xai has been accused of misleading in the Grok 3 benchmark report.)
As some users of X have pointed out, Grok 3 via Xai’s API also has a smaller context window than the model can support. (A “context window” refers to the number of tokens that a model can process at once.) The API is at its maximum of 131,072 tokens, or approximately 97,500 words.
When Musk unveiled Grok about two years ago, he pitched the AI model as an edgy, unfiltered, anti-‘awakening’. He told me some of those promises. For example, being told that it is vulgar, Grok and Grok 2 is willing to obligate, spitting out colorful languages that you don’t hear from ChatGpt.
However, the Grok model before Grok 3 is hedged into political subjects and does not cross certain boundaries. In fact, one study found that Grok remains on the left in topics such as transgender rights, diversity programs, and inequality.
Musk has condemned the actions of Grok’s training data (public web pages) and pledged to “get Grok closer to political neutrality.” While there is no mistake to attract attention that temporarily censor President Donald Trump and President Musk’s flattery, it is still not clear whether Xai has achieved that goal at a model level and what the long-term outcome will be.
