The new EuroTPC project has been officially launched with the support of the EuroHPC joint venture. It aims to strengthen Europe’s influence within the global Trillion Parameter Consortium (TPC), an international initiative focused on promoting open AI for science.

The three-year program will start on May 1, 2026 and will bring together Europe’s leading supercomputing and research organizations to coordinate Europe’s contribution to next-generation AI models.

The EuroTPC project, led by the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, includes partners from Finland, Italy, France and Germany, including CSC – IT Center for Science, CINECA, Neovia Innovation and BADW-LRZ.

The initiative was selected through the HORIZON-JU-EUROHPC-2025-INCO-01 call and secured approximately €1.5 million in Horizon Europe funding.

A central objective of this project is to ensure that European priorities and standards are reflected in the development of future ultra-large-scale AI systems.

Through close collaboration between high-performance computing centres, AI researchers and industry, the EuroTPC project is expected to accelerate scientific discovery, while strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty and competitiveness in advanced computing.

Europe expands its position in global AI research

TPC was launched in 2023 to support the open and collaborative development of large-scale AI models designed for scientific applications.

Unlike commercial large-scale language models developed behind closed doors, the consortium focuses on transparent research, shared infrastructure, and international cooperation.

The EuroTPC project acts as a European coordination layer within its global efforts. One of its first initiatives is the creation of a dedicated European TPC Office to manage collaboration between research institutions, align projects with EU policy priorities and develop a long-term strategic roadmap for European participation.

The framework aims to give European researchers a strong voice in decisions about AI infrastructure, datasets, evaluation methods and governance standards related to scientific AI systems.

Building trustworthy AI for science

The main focus of the EuroTPC project is the development of trustworthy scientific AI using open and scalable infrastructure.

The consortium will support large-scale AI model work alongside the data ecosystem, benchmarking systems, and computing resources needed to operate them effectively.

These technologies are likely to play an increasingly important role across scientific and industrial fields.

Key areas include climate modeling, pharmaceutical research, materials science, and advanced manufacturing, where large-scale AI systems are already beginning to reshape research workflows.

The initiative also aims to strengthen connections between Europe’s high-performance computing ecosystem and AI development efforts.

The EuroTPC project aims to improve the efficiency and performance of multi-trillion parameter AI systems by combining supercomputing power with advanced machine learning research.

Collaboration across the European HPC ecosystem

The consortium will work closely with EuroHPC AI factories, research centres, private companies and the scientific community across Europe.

Planned activities include technical working groups, hackathons, and collaborative workshops designed to foster knowledge sharing and broad stakeholder participation.

This stronger collaboration is essential if Europe wants to remain competitive in the global race to develop advanced AI for science and technology.

As the United States and China invest heavily in large-scale AI infrastructure, European institutions are increasingly focused on maintaining technological independence while promoting open research standards.

Over the next three years, the EuroTPC project is expected to lay the foundations for a more unified European approach to scientific AI development and help position the region as a major contributor to the future of open, large-scale AI research.
