After teasing her return to “OG Facebook” earlier this year, social networks on Thursday announced an update that provides an easy way for users to connect with friends. The company is introducing a new Facebook Friends tab that only introduces updates from friends, without any other recommended content. In a blog post, Meta explains that the idea is to bring home a feature that focuses on Facebook’s original mission to connect people with friends through a social networking experience.
Initially, tabs available only in the US and Canada showcase friend’s content, including posts, reels, stories, birthdays, and friend requests.
Previously, the tab provided places to see requests from your friends and other “people you know”.
In October, the company began a Z-focused redesign of its Gen Z-focused social network, hoping to attract young crowds who largely abandoned or ignored Facebook in favor of Meta’s Instagram and other social apps like Tiktok. These previous changes focused on connecting users to community information, Facebook groups and videos.
However, in January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the company’s fourth quarter revenue that “return to OG Facebook” was part of its key goals for 2025.
“I think there are many opportunities to make it [Facebook] He told investors, adding, “I think this will go back to the way Facebook was originally used.”
The CEO didn’t say what changes were in store at the time, but the Friends Tab update is the first of many to unfold this year.
In a blog post, the company acknowledged that social networks need to return to their roots.
“Over the years, Facebook has evolved to meet changing needs, creating best-in-class experiences across groups, videos, marketplaces, and more, but the magic of friends has fallen,” Post said.
The new Friends tab is available from the home feed navigation bar on Facebook and can be accessed through the bookmarks section of the app, the company said.
