A Cornell University student facing deportation after his visa was revoked as his campus activism said he had decided to leave the United States.

Momodou Taal, a British and Gambian citizen, had asked federal courts to suspend detention. but He posted on x Late Monday, he did not believe that in his favor the legal ruling would ensure his safety or ability to speak up.

“I lost faith when I was able to walk the streets without being accused,” Mumodo Tar wrote from an unknown place. “After considering these options, I made the decision to leave on my own terms.”

The government says it cancelled its Taal student visa in March to engage in “destructive protests” and ignore university policies and create a hostile environment for Jewish students.

Tar, a 31-year-old doctoral student at Ivy League School in Ithaca, New York, was suspended last fall after a group of pro-Palestinian activists disrupt the campus career fair. He continued his studies remotely this semester.

Taal filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration, citing his right to give a free speech. The lawsuit was withdrawn on Monday.

In his post, Tar did not say where he was writing or where he intended to live. He did not immediately respond to texts seeking comment.

“Everything I tried to do is helping to affirm the humanity of the Palestinians. This is a struggle to leave me with a lasting mark,” writes Tar.

His attorney, Eric Lee, did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment. Lee Posted on x: “If people like Momodo are not welcome here, what is America?”
