Fortnite Maker Epic Games resolves anti-trust cases against Samsung

Fortnite Maker Epic Games has settled an antitrust lawsuit against Samsung, according to court filings. The incident, filed last September, accused Samsung of working with Google to block rival app stores on Samsung phones by default.

“Following the parties’ argument, they are dismissing the trial against Samsung,” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said in an X post. “We are grateful that Samsung addresses Epic’s concerns,” he added.

The epic spokesman declined further comment, pointing out Sweeney’s post. Samsung and Google did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.

Epic has argued in the lawsuit that Samsung’s “auto-blocker” feature blocked downloads outside the Google Play Store and Samsung Galaxy Store was a coordinated effort to block competition for app distribution.

At the time, Google called Epic’s legal action “valueless” and said that “Android device manufacturers can take their own steps to keep their users safe and secure,” Samsung planned to “struggle vigorously over the unfounded claims of the epic game.”

The settlement takes place almost a year after Epic launched its own mobile app store to distribute both its own games and third-party titles.

Before suing Samsung, Epic won another anti-trust case against Google in 2023 over allegations that Google’s App Store practices constituted an illegal monopoly. The judge ordered Google to open the App Store as rivals, although its decision on appeal is still pending.
