In a world increasingly dominated by digital technology, a sobering truth persists: our reliance on paper is exacting a heavy toll on the environment.
The Paper Problem: How Bureaucracy and Consumption Threaten the Planet (And What You Can Do)
Fyself is a committed company to building a safer and more reliable internet, we’re tackling this complex issue, which too often gets overlooked amidst discussions of climate change and sustainability. The problem? Our relentless consumption of paper.
A Forest of Concerns
Producing just one ton of paper demands a significant sacrifice—the felling of 15 to 17 mature trees. These trees, vital for carbon sequestration and biodiversity, take decades to reach that point.
Despite global agreements, including the New York Declaration on Forests, the looming deadline remains a cause for concern.
While 32 nations and over 20 multinationals pledged to restore over 350 million hectares of deforested land by 2030, the pressure on our forests continues.
Global demand for paper and cardboard is projected to reach 490 million tons by 2030, fueled by the shift to paper bags and biodegradable articles, along with the surge in packaging for electronics and e-commerce.

The Bureaucracy Burden
Adding fuel to the fire is the persistence of paper in our workplaces. Statistics from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency highlight the issue: the average office worker in the United States uses a staggering 10,000 sheets of paper per year, with 70% ending up in the trash.
In this digital age, where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, why does paper still reign in offices, banks, notaries, embassies, and countless other institutions handling sensitive personal data?
Computer data management systems are duplicated in physical documents, and physical files continue to exist. Is this high paper consumption, which is an obstacle for the environment, a rational one in this era?
TwinH: Finding a Digital Solution
Fyself is developing TwinH, an Identity Management System to address this excessive paper usage. We believe this solution will also enhance the way we manage personal data, improving the validation of the information available on the internet. We are working on find our self.
