From Google to Remote Worker: Return 3 days a week – or lose your job

Just a week after Google fired hundreds of people on Android, Pixel and Chrome units amid a strategic shift towards AI, the company is now tightening the screws of its remote workers.

Citing internal documents, several Google teams have told remote employees that their work could be at risk unless they have returned to the office for at least three days, according to a CNBC report. The message is direct: accept a hybrid schedule or take a voluntary exit package.

This shows a clear shift in tone from the early Pandemic Days, when Google led fees to flexible work. Nowadays, the pendulum is swinging in other ways, especially as high-tech companies refocus their efficiency and margins. For remote employees who have moved far from the city hub, the new policy could mean uprooting again. This time, we are under pressure.

This shift will begin walking the privilege of remote work that has become the norm during the pandemic, with more businesses, especially technology. For Google employees who are away from the main office hub, the new stance could mean they have to move back or leave again.

Google forces some remote workers to come back three days a week or lose their jobs

According to CNBC, Google Technical Services staff were told they should live within 50 miles of the office or accept voluntary exits. The company also offers paid relocations to help smooth the transition, but the message is still clear.

“Several units within Google have notified remote workers that their work will be at risk if they do not show up in the office three days a week,” CNBC reported.

Google’s HR ARM employees, known as People Operations, are under similar missions. People within commuting distances will need to return face-to-face to hybrid schedules or facial role elimination by June. Furthermore, those living there are still far away now, but if you wish to apply for a new position within the company, you must attend the office.

All of this happens as Google keeps cost trimming and moves more resources to AI infrastructure and employment. The company has been cutting across the team since 2023, with its workforce already falling from 190,000 to around 183,000 employees.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin added more fuel to Office Fire earlier this year. In a note to AI workers, he said the “productivity sweet spot” is 60 hours a week. The tone reflects the increasing urgency of Google to compete in the AI army.

Our return policy to the office is not yet company-wide at least. Google spokesman Courtenay Mencini said he left it to individual teams. “To support this, some teams have asked remote employees who live near their offices to return to in-person work three days a week,” Mencini told CNBC.

Still, internal notes suggest that this is more than a suggestion.

In February, HR Chief Fionasikconi announced a voluntary exit program for people-run, US-based employees. Similar offers were expanded in January to workers on platforms and devices groups, including Android, Chrome, Fitbit and Nest. That unit alone has been cut by around 20 teams so far this year.

Although remote status was not officially cited as a reason for the layoffs, it certainly played a role based on the tone of the internal email.

Earlier this year, Google merged its Android team with its hardware group under SVP Rick Osterloh. In January, Osterloh admitted that not everyone could adapt to the new hybrid schedule and offered an exit plan as an alternative.

Mencini says the total unit is “trying to work more effectively,” which includes role trimming. At the same time, she said the company still employs both the US and overseas.

So far, Google hasn’t made it a blanket policy, but if you’re a remote Googler within 50 miles of your office, we recommend starting lunch.
