Google has shaken up developer tool space with what attracts attention. FireBase Studio- is a browser-based, AI-driven development environment created to challenge tools such as Cursor, Bolt, and V0.
Firebase Studio, announced on Wednesday on Google Cloud Next, is more than just a development tool. A full stack platform powered by Gemini AI, helps developers build and deploy AI apps directly from their browsers. It’s free during preview.
“Millions of developers use Firebase to engage users, powering over 70 billion app instances everywhere every day, from mobile devices and web browsers to embedded platforms and agent experiences,” Google said. “But full stack development is evolving quickly, and the rise of generative AI has changed not only how apps are built, but which types of apps are possible.”
The news follows Google’s move a week ago, making Gemini 2.5 Pro Canvas free and “atmosphere coding” out of reach for everyone through a simple prompt.
Firebase Studio: Google’s free AI coding tool for building full stack AI apps
At its heart, Firebase Studio combines FireBase Services and Gemini AI into a single workspace. Developers can move from idea to production without switching tools. Runs fully in the cloud and enables prototype, build, test and deployment in the same browser tab.
Google explained this way:
“Google Cloud Next introduces new capabilities that transform Firebase into an end-to-end platform to accelerate the full application lifecycle. The new FireBase Studio, available to everyone in preview, is a cloud-based agent development environment that includes Gemini, where developers need to quickly create and publish production AI apps.”
The studio includes over 60 templates, natural language prompts for building apps, and tight integration with Google Cloud Run with Firebase backend tools. It also accepts sketches and images that help shape UI components. You don’t need to be a design professional to get what’s workable on the screen.
Build a full stack AI app using FireBase Studio
In a statement, Google said it has launched several new services over the past year, including Firebase, Genkit and Gemini for Project IDX (fork of code OS), speeding up and simplifying the process of building AI applications. The company added that the launch of Firebase Studio has marked a major step forward by combining these features with Firebase services and Gemini’s creative support, combined with the new native agent agent experience.

What can I build in Firebase Studio?
With Gemini Code Assist Baked In, Firebase Studio becomes more than just an editor. Developers get a smart agent to help upgrade code, generate documentation, and generate stress testing apps. There is also an app prototyping agent that helps with architecture and logic layout.
There is no need to install anything locally. Get 3 free workspaces in preview. If you are part of the Google Developer Program, it will be up to 30. On top of that, new users will earn $300 in credits.
Did Google Firebase Studio kill Cursor, Bolt, Lovable, V0?
It didn’t take long for the X developers to start measuring. What is the consensus? Firebase Studio feels like a mashup of cursors, bolts, V0 and Google’s own Gemini. Everything is accessible in your browser and is free.
Here’s how it stacks up:
Cursor is a powerful AI-powered code editor, but does not offer end-to-end buildings and deployments.
Bolt helps with quick prototypes, but doesn’t go deep into backend integrations or AI workflows.
V0 on V0 makes it easy to create frontends, but excludes it from providing a full stack experience with built-in deployment.
FireBase Studio aims to do it all with native Google Cloud integration and real AI support throughout the app’s lifecycle.
Firebase Studio includes a Gemini Code Assist Agent for Smarter AI App Development
Google said it provides early access to Gemini Code Assist Agents within Firebase Studio. According to the company, developers can engage AI agents throughout the entire workflow. For example, migrate code between Java versions using migration agents, AI test agents perform adversarial tests, perform potentially harmful output, identify code documentation agents, and interact with the Wiki-Style knowledge base onboard of new team members.

Early reaction
The developers are already building it. One user of X said, “As a quick test, I created a web app like Tinder for founders to swipe right or left in VCS. It was deployed in a few minutes.” Google called another, called “A Major Flex,” and said Google just raised the bar for a quick product workflow.
“WOW Google has released FireBase Studio. You can build any app in natural language, change it, and deploy everything in one place.

Essentially it’s a free alternative to cursors, bolts, or V0 directly into your browser.

Why is it important?
AI has changed the way you build your apps, but maintaining them means learning multiple tools and workflows. It takes time, but most developers don’t have it. Google appears to be betting that it will flock to it if it offers a simple, unified platform that works out of the box.
Whether you’re hacking side projects, building MVPs, or working on large scale, Firebase Studio lowers the barrier. Additionally, with built-in integrations in Firebase and Google Cloud, the handoff between ideas and production is much smoother.
How to try Firebase Studio
Firebase Studio is currently available in preview. If you are participating in Google’s developer program, you can use up to three free workspaces. New sign-ups will earn $300 in credits to experiment without paying in advance.
