How the UK nuclear task force speeds up the nuclear renaissance

The UK’s nuclear control task force, part of the government’s change plan, will be important to enable a nuclear renaissance across the country and to grow the economy.

In a new step, John Fingleton CBE was appointed as the lead of today’s task force to provide this new nuclear renaissance.

This appointment is the latest step in the Prime Minister’s ambitious plan, bringing time to a planning system that has long held back new nuclear power, freeing nuclear from the burden of troublesome planning, building new plants, and promoting energy security and economic growth.

Provides new nuclear projects to expand

The independent task force identifies how nuclear regulations support all safety and security standards while delivering investments faster and more cost-effectively, simplifying processes and reducing duplication.

This follows the reform package laid out by the Prime Minister in January. This includes plans to dispose of the set list of eight sites. And remove the expiration dates of nuclear planning rules so that projects do not time out and the industry can plan for long term purposes.

John Fingleton CBE brings considerable experience from outside the nuclear industry as the former boss of the Fair Trade Bureau and the UK’s Board of Research and Innovation. He leads a panel of nuclear experts to advance the nuclear renaissance, unlock economic growth and accelerate towards net zero.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “Planning a change and clean energy mission means it is time to build, build and build, this is the time of the country’s nuclear renaissance.

“John has the right experience to drive this review with the urgency needed to realize our nuclear ambitions.”

Overcoming barriers to nuclear renaissance

The UK is now considered one of the world’s most expensive countries to build nuclear power. The task force will explore ways to speed up approvals for new reactor designs and streamline how developers interact with regulators.

The Task Force’s recommendations for nuclear regulations cover both civilian and defence nuclear weapons to support both energy and national security and unlock economic growth.

The task force will help strengthen the importance of citizens’ defense nuclear enterprises. This will help the government provide Triple Rock’s commitment to UK nuclear deterrence.

Additionally, to explore better international alignment, overseas approved reactor designs can be greenlit faster and minimize expensive changes.

This is part of the government’s push to promote growth, and suffered increased legal costs and uncertainty as a result of the Prime Minister’s announcement earlier this year, overhauling legal agendas to major infrastructure projects, including nuclear power, and Sizewell C took local activists to court.

John Fingleton, lead of the Nuclear Regulation Task Force, concluded: “I will work closely with businesses, regulators and other interested individuals and groups to identify how regulations can better enable and incentivize the nuclear renaissance.

“New nuclear power is essential to promoting increased productivity in the UK economy and bringing prosperity to workers and consumers across the UK.

“The Task Force works hard to achieve these goals.”
