“Fortunately,” I thought when I navigated the 2025 Hyundai Ionyk 5 to its final location at the Tesla Supercharged Station in Palm Springs.
EVs really didn’t need juice. However, this updated compact, all-electric SUV comes equipped with Tesla’s standard North American charging port. It’s time to test how well Hyundai matches Tesla’s supercharger network.
Experience revealed the gap in a literal sense. And while Hyundai shouldn’t be held responsible for everything, it has shown that seemingly good ideas don’t always translate in the real world.
For example, I reversed to the parking lot, opened the charging port on the passenger’s rear quarter panel, grabbed a charging cord surrounded by a cabinet sitting on the driver’s side of the car.
Well, Hyundai, there’s a problem. It didn’t arrive.
Another Tesla was able to free up that space and use that charging cable to essentially wait for two spaces. Alternatively, you can use the in-car navigation to find a CCS-equipped charging station and use the adapter that comes with your car.
Having a generous amount of battery, I decided to toddle my day, but others may not be that lucky.

CCS, or composite charging systems, were North American standards and were used by all car manufacturers except Tesla, which developed their own ports and charging stations called the North American Charging Standards (NACS).
Automakers began moving to NACS in May 2023 after Ford reached an agreement that would allow EV owners to access more than 12,000 Tesla Superchargers in the US and Canada. GM followed, and within six months almost all car manufacturers had signed similar contracts with Tesla. Access will initially be made via Tesla adapters, but most of these automakers (including Hyundai and KIA) have also agreed to integrate NACS charging technology into future EVs.
The 2025 Hyundai Ion Iku 5 is one of these.
Of course, not all of this is Hyundai’s fault. The IONIQ 5 always has a charging port on the rear passenger side, and running it would be a difficult suggestion. Tesla also recommends that “we encourage all vehicle manufacturers to standardize charging port locations on the rear driver or passenger side.”
Buyers of 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 will be lucky to find CCS stations and use adapters. Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 can charge from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes with a CCS charger. The same filling device takes up to 30 minutes on a NACS charger.
Hyundai is a bit easier by choosing a free ChargePoint home charger with a $400 charging credit or IONIQ 5 purchase, and those with an older Hyundai EV with a native CCS port will be able to use the MyHyundai owner portal. You can get a free NACS adapter through. It will start in March.
Hyundai owners will also have access to the planned Ionna charging network. The Ionna network, which is expected to have 30,000 NACs and CCS charging points by 2030, is a collaboration between BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Stellarantis and Toyota.
2025 Hyundai Ioinik 5: bigger battery, more range, new trim
With SE, SEL, XRT and limited trim in rear or all-wheel drive trim, the 2025 IONIQ 5 might look like a previous model year. However, there are some important differences that begin with the size of the battery.
The standard range battery ratchet is 63 kWh to 5 kWh, but the extension range is 84 kWh, an increase of 6.6 kWh. Depending on the drivetrain, battery and trim combination, we expect to see a 245-mile range at the low end and a range of up to 318-mile range with a large battery driven rear-drive Ion Ik 5.
Power outputs also vary, starting with 168 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and then grows to 225 ponies with an extended range battery. The most powerful setup settles at 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque for all-wheel drive vehicles with a larger battery.
Technology upgrades

The 2025 IONIQ 5 also has some new parlor tricks.
The digital key function works with mobile phones in your pocket or wallet. This is a great upgrade when juggling kids, groceries and drinks.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are currently wireless, with air updates on all models.
Additionally, Hyundai Pay allows owners to add credit cards to their infotainment system to automatically add reserved street parking fees. Drivers will also receive the latest blind spot collision avoidance and parking assistance.
Let’s get dirty

For those who want to go for a little more adventure with an electric SUV, the Ioniq 5 comes in XRT trim.
This model is designed to give you a little adventure in the pass thanks to a 1-inch lift and a 29-inch Continental Cross-Contact ATR tire. This model also gets the terrain buttons on the steering wheel, which offers snow, mud and sand modes.
Hyundai loosened the fun stain loop for me, and I found it to be playful enough to bring a smile to the car. Sand mode does not completely turn off traction control. To do that, you will need to manually push the traction control button. Adjust the Brake Leben properties to prevent the vehicle from automatically starting to slow down as it lifts up. It also divides torque 50/50 for optimal traction.
Throwing it into the corner and getting a bit of a slide is fun, but the ABS system can interfere with traction and off-road stopping distances, while great on the pavement, while not building up dirt in front of the tires .

Drive mode also tweaks this system, which is great. Still, instant electric torque means that it’s easy to get on the throttle, power out of the turn, and scream towards the next, throwing the tail of a dirt rooster in the process.
XRT is not a kind of rock crawler. The total ground clearance is only 7 inches. This is 2 inches less than the wilderness of the Subaru Forester. Off-road geometry is better than the Toyota RAV4 Woodland Edition, but small obstacles and swells make more sense.
We found a 19.8 degree approach angle limit on the drive, and some of the XRT-specific front fascia has returned to just a few times twice. Although there is no special underbody protection on the XRT battery, the departure angle is a healthy 30 degree, and the car is equipped with two front toe hooks.
Hyundai Ion Iku 5 in 2025 is shining

On pavement, the Ioniq 5 is as fun as ever, with zippy acceleration, balanced handling and a comfortable ride.
Part of my first drive took me to a higher elevation where all-season tires were placed in slimy snow testing. The car never lost its grip and stimulated confidence in this desert inhabitant.
The 2025 Hyundai Ioike 5 starts at $43,975, including destination fees for rear-wheel-drive base SE models with standard batteries. The off-road XRT can be won for $56,875, but it will return $59,575 thanks to the all-wheel drive top limited trim.
You can get the Ford Mustang Mach-E at a comparable range of lower starting prices. All MACH-E vehicles are standard with hands-free/eyes-up blue cruise highway driving assistance. You pay a subscription fee to use the technology, but Hyundai does not offer anything like that.

It is difficult to find obstacles in Hyundai Ion Iku 5 in 2025. This refreshed Ioike 5 keeps the pavement calm and adds a little adventure thrill with the new XRT trim. However, owners may find themselves avoiding the Tesla supercharger despite its integrated NACS port.
