Indian court orders lawsuit blocking proton mail

The High Court in Karnataka, India has ordered blocking the national end-to-end email provider Proton Mail.

On April 29, Karnataka High Court said the ruling responded to a legal complaint filed by M Moser Design Associated India Pvt Ltd in January 2025.

Cybersecurity

The complaint alleges that staff received emails containing indecent, abusive and vulgar language, artificial intelligence (AI)-generated deepfake images and other sexually explicit content, according to Livelaw.

At the hearing, Judge M Nagaprasanna ordered the Indian government to “start the lawsuit from the standpoint of Section 69A of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

“The resource locator (URL) for problematic uniforms until such procedures are taken and concluded by the Government of India. […] will be blocked with. ”

At the time of writing, Proton Mail is accessible in India. Hacker News has contacted the Swiss company for comment and if we hear, we will update the story.

Cybersecurity

This is the second time the service has been threatened by a state ban. After reports revealed earlier last year that a hoax bomb threat was sent via Proton Mail, the company said it was “resolutely opposed to the use of Proton Services for purposes that violate Swiss law.”

Proton is not permitted to send data to foreign authorities under Swiss law, but is obligated to respond to orders from Swiss authorities. Swiss authorities may work with external agencies to tackle illegal activities.

“End-to-end encryption means strong privacy protection for users’ emails, files, calendar entries and passwords, but we are not permitted to use Proton Mail for purposes that violate Swiss law,” he added.
