Instagram may spin off reels to another app

Meta reports that he is launching a standalone app for short-format videos, citing an anonymous source where he heard Instagram head Adam Mosseri talk to staff about the project.

The project is a codenamed project Ray, which aims to improve recommendations for new users and existing users in the US, and is reportedly posting more three-minute videos.

Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Last month, the company announced a video editing app called Edit to compete with Capcut (owned by Tiktok Parent Company Bytedance) with the aim of taking advantage of the uncertain future of Tiktok and ordinances in the United States.

Currently, your Instagram feed is a combination of photos, videos (reels) and stories. However, many users find the app cluttered because it has a large video and doesn’t stick to its roots as a photo-sharing app. If your company gets caught up in a standalone app for short videos, it could create an opportunity for Instagram to highlight other features.

Earlier this year, Instagram began paying creators to promote Instagram on other platforms such as Tiktok, Snapchat and YouTube. It also reportedly began offering creators a lot of money to post exclusively on the reel.
