New analysis of camp bans and punitive anti-homelessness measures shows that it is not helpful in reducing actual homelessness.

As Roshan Abraham explains in the following city, “In this study, the study used data derived from the Continuums of Care to examine the impact of ordinances enacted in the 100 most populous US cities from 2000 to 2021.

A study beyond the camp ban to include other laws on public drunkards and other criminalized but not private behaviours found “a spike in homelessness beyond previous levels after quickly falling into visible homelessness when the law was passed.”

The survey found that unsheltered homelessness increased by 2.2% in cities that criminalized homelessness. “The authors investigated whether criminal ordinances could reduce uncovered homelessness at the local level by pushing unsanctioned people into nearby cities and counties, but found no evidence to support this.”
