iOS 19 is halfway through, Apple turns to mobile games

A few weeks later at Apple’s Flagship Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) event, the company shows it is paying attention to mobile gaming opportunities.

Apple already has subscription-based arcade products for iOS, allowing users to access a variety of mobile games, including cult classic indie games such as Stardew Valley. However, according to the Digital Trends Report, the company is taking it a step further by acquiring its first game studio RAC7.

Apple has joined other seemingly unlikely suspects in its investment in mobile gaming. For example, Netflix acquired several game studios after launching Netflix games in 2021.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg confirmed the 9TO5MAC report that Apple is developing a dedicated gaming app for iOS 19. The app replaces arcade apps and integrates with Apple Arcade to host features such as game leaderboards, recommendations, challenges, and social features. The new app can also be integrated into iMessage or FaceTime to facilitate remote multiplayer games.

Apple’s additional investment in mobile games comes when cloud games (which allow users to stream games to devices without downloading huge files) are on the rise. Microsoft is the leader in this shift and offers products from Xbox Cloud Gaming.
