It appears that humanity is using brave to enhance web search for its claude chatbots

Earlier this week, humanity deployed the web search capabilities of Claude, an AI-powered chatbot platform, bringing bots alongside many rivals. It was not immediately clear which search indexes were powering the feature. One possibility was that humanity developed its own development. However, the evidence suggests that it is Brave Search, a search engine maintained by browser developer Brave.

As software engineer Antonio Zugaldia discovered on Friday, humanity added a “Brave Search” to its “Sub-Processor List” in this week’s document. British programmer Simon Willison reports that at least one search in Claude and Brave returned the same quote. Willison also discovered that Claude’s web search feature contains a parameter called “BravesearchParams.”

We reach out to humanity and update this post if we receive a reply.

Brave supports the search capabilities of at least one other chatbot: Mistral’s chatbot platform Le Chat. In February, Brave and Mistral announced that Le Chat will use live web results using Brave’s search API.

Some AI companies keep information about their search index partnerships close to their chest, perhaps for competitive reasons. Openai has a partnership with Bing, but also uses other private sources to enhance the search experience in ChatGPT.
