In the victory of Brooklyn Bike supporters, the judge ordered New York City to halt the planned removal of the protected bike lane at Bedford Avenue. The judge has yet to issue a final verdict, but “for now, street safety advocates have cried out that they have stopped plans for the city, at least for now, harming the infamous and dangerous streets.”

According to the lawsuit, “despite the completion of the installation of the upgraded lane in October 2024, and the data showing both old ones. [painted lane] Since the upgraded design was installed, it has been safe or effective for all road users and has improved safety. Without proper legal notice, the city announced that it would remove upgraded bike lanes inappropriately, fraudulently, and on Friday, June 13, 2025. ”

As Gersh Kuntzman explains in Streetsblog NYC, “Leaders of the Hasidic community have complained that bike lanes will take outsiders to their enclaves, but after several crashes involving children running into bike lanes from illegally parked cars and buses,” he claimed it was unsafe.

According to Kuntzman, “Cities have made some design adjustments, but illegal hoodies consistently thwart the city’s efforts to provide sunlight so that cyclists and children can see each other.”

The judge ordered the parties to return to court on August 6th.
