Europe’s transportation infrastructure is on the verge of major transformation thanks to innovative liaison projects.

The initiative aims to integrate sustainability into road networks by introducing groundbreaking solutions such as solar guardrails.

Designed to generate renewable energy and increase road safety, this cutting-edge solar technology could play a key role in Europe’s decarbonization efforts.

Solar Power Guardrail: Converts highways to renewable energy sources

Drivers traveling along the highway from Turin to Trieste near Elbasco in Italy may soon witness history.

What looks like a normal guardrail is actually an advanced energy production system. Integrated with ultra-thin solar panels, this pioneering solar guardrail is expected to generate approximately 25 megawatts of electricity per year.

This production is sufficient to power approximately 20 households, indicating its potential as a sustainable energy solution.

Unlocking the possibilities of road infrastructure

With over 136,700km of roads across Europe, the technology could significantly contribute to the continent’s renewable energy capacity.

This concept stems from acknowledging the untapped potential of roadside infrastructure. By acquiring solar energy through vast guardrails, roads can actively participate in clean energy production.

Dual Purpose: Safety and Sustainability

Developed by Tecnalia and Vita International, the Solar Guardrail combines energy generation and improved road safety.

Unlike traditional barriers, it includes special seats designed to protect motorcyclists while housing solar panels.

Additionally, the generated power can support critical roadside operations such as traffic signals, street lighting, and tunnel ventilation, reducing the dependency on traditional power grids and reducing operational costs for road operators.

Real world testing and future developments

The 100-meter test installation is expected to be rolled out by the end of the year. This test evaluates the performance of the guardrails across a variety of seasons and conditions to ensure durability and efficiency.

The initiative falls under the Liaison Project, an EU-funded effort to promote sustainability and circularity in transportation infrastructure.

One of the major technical hurdles is the shadow effect of passing the vehicle on solar panel efficiency.

To counter this, developers are exploring advanced power electronics that quarantine shadowed panels without affecting the rest of the system.

Additionally, the innovative panel design with a parallel connection scheme with the series helps reduce performance losses.

Another important consideration is durability. Although solar guardrails are designed to withstand the effects of standard roads, individual solar panels may require regular replacement after an accident.

To address this, the design prioritizes simple maintenance and incorporates protective coatings to minimize damage and extends life.

Promote the circular economy of road infrastructure

The solar guardrail is consistent with broader European sustainability initiatives. In addition to generating renewable energy, the liaison project is working on eco-friendly road construction methods.

This includes geopolymer-based concrete slabs and 3D printed beams from recycled materials, reducing the dependence on carbon-intensive materials such as cement and steel.

The path ahead: challenges and opportunities

Despite this possibility, widespread adoption of solar guardrails requires a change in mindset between policymakers and infrastructure stakeholders.

The road construction sector has long been resistant to change and has placed a challenge on large-scale implementation.

However, growing environmental concerns and the increased viability of renewable energy solutions have led to strong cases for integrating this technology into future road development projects.

The solar guardrail represents an important step towards a more sustainable and energy-efficient transport system.

By leveraging existing road infrastructure for solar energy generation, this innovation can play a key role in reducing emissions and increasing the resilience of the transportation network.

As real-world testing progresses, policymakers and industry leaders are recognized as policymakers and industry leaders to accelerate adoption of this game-changing technology.
