Lufthansa and Switzerland are shaking the way travel is sold through this blockchain. With a bold push to rethink flight delivery, the two airlines teamed up with the Camino Network Foundation to host Web3 Hackathon on Frankfurt.

Over 48 hours, 13 travel technology teams have built blockchain and AI-powered prototypes aimed at reducing distribution costs, improving sustainability and speeding up the market.

Unlike the typical hackathons filled with theory, this was all about real-world execution. Each team worked on the Camino Network, a blockchain specifically built for the travel sector. The project worked on everything from local payments and CO₂ tracking to personalized group bookings and market expansion.

An outstanding project

The ju-seniors of the Lufthansa Group’s executives highlighted three projects with clear commercial potential.

Unimoni has developed a solution to bring 300,000 non-aiata travel agents in India into the Camino Network. It will support local payments and open new markets to globally expand direct access to Luftan Saflight content, reduce distribution costs and open new markets.

The teams at Swiss and Digital Hangar have introduced an upgraded Travel-ID concept that integrates with Web3 wallets. The system allows users to make tokenized travel services such as issuing, exchanging and vouchers digital IDs all into one safe space.

HotelPlan has created a group booking tool for travelers starting from various locations but heading to the same destination. This allows users to book together and pay individually, streamlining the normally clunky process.

The ju umpire also awarded a special “Heart Winner” award to Carbify, a team that built a carbon compensation platform with traceable, globally planted data on tree planting, adding transparency to the offset.

What the organizer says

“The Swiss project manager and one of the lead organizers of Hackathon,” said Michael Huerke, Swiss project manager and one of the lead organizers of Hackathon.

“It was impressive to see the team integrate LHG flight content into the live platform in just two days. There is a clear commercial possibility for this type of technology, especially considering partner onboarding and much lower distribution costs.”

Pablo Castillo, CEO of Chain4travel, the team behind Camino, added:

“Connections that previously took months can occur in days. Hotel plans show cost savings of up to 98%, while Carbify’s tools suggest sustainability scores of up to 50%. That’s a huge leap.”

jure panel

The project was evaluated by a panel of Lufthansa Group executives and digital leaders.

Ana Jaime Agramon – Digital Product Head & IT Portfolio, Switzerland

Ignatz Hannak – Lufthansa Airlines, Head of Digital Ecosystem Steering & Innovation

Jochen Göttelmann – VP IT Lufthansa Airlines and Operations IT Lufthansa Group

Sebastian Riedle – Chief Product Officer and Managing Director of Digital Hangars

Tim Fishbach – Head of Lufthansa Tourist Sales Home Market

What’s next?

Lufthansa Group is currently evaluating which winning ideas will move into the pilot application. Chain4Travel says it will continue to help people apply travel agencies in ways that actually solve problems, not just futuristic sounds.

The backbone of all projects, the Camino Network is a Layer 1 blockchain for travel. Supported by over $10 million in funding, over 100 validators and over 200 travel brands, Camino aims to correct years of inefficiency in how travel content was distributed, paid and settled.
