Mark Zuckerberg says Meta’s Llama model hits the 1B download

In a short message about the thread Tuesday morning, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company’s “open” AI model family, Lama, has hit a billion downloads. This has increased from 650 million downloads since early December 2024. This has increased by about 53% over the course of about three months.

Enhance Meta AI, Meta AI assistant across Tech Giant’s various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Llama is part of Meta’s long-standing bid to nurture a broad AI product ecosystem. The company creates models and creates the tools needed for tweaking and customization, which are available for free under its own license.

Some developers and companies have issues with the Llama license terms, which are somewhat commercially limited. However, since its launch in 2023, Llamas have been extensively successful. Companies such as Spotify, AT&T, and Doordash use the Llama model in production today.

That does not suggest that the meta is not facing a set-off.

Llama is at the heart of AI copyright lawsuits, accusing Meta of training many models with copyrighted e-books without permission. Some EU countries have been forced to stop the llama on data privacy concerns in the meta and in some cases cancel altogether. The Lama’s performance is jumping by models like the R1 of the Chinese AI Lab Deepseek.

Meta is said to have scrambled to set up “War Rooms” to apply Deepseek’s learning to Llama’s own development, and the company recently said it would spend up to $80 billion on AI-related projects this year.

Meta plans to launch several Llama models over the coming months, including “inference” models along the lines of Openai’s O3-Mini, and “inference” models along the models with native multimodal capabilities. Zuckerberg suggests a “agent” function, suggesting that some of these models can act autonomously.

“I think this is the year when llamas and open source become the most advanced and widely used AI model,” Zuckerberg said in a revenue call for Meta in January for the fourth quarter 2024. “[O]The goal of [Llama this year] It’s about leading. ”

Learn more at Llamacon, Meta’s first generation AI developer conference, scheduled to take place on April 29th.
