Microsoft will expand security updates for Windows 10 for a year with new registration options

On Tuesday, Microsoft announced it is extending the Windows 10 Extended Security Update (ESU) with additional extensions.

The development will officially terminate security updates for devices running Windows 10 and will stop security updates ahead of the upcoming Tech Giant deadline of October 14, 2025. The desktop operating system was launched in July 2015.

Cybersecurity

The Windows manufacturer describes ESU as the “last resort option” for customers who need to run legacy Microsoft software that has reached end-of-life (EOL) status. This is intended to be a temporary solution when migrating to a new supported platform.

As part of a new registration option announced by Microsoft, individuals can opt-in to the program from their personal Windows 10 PC via the “Registration Wizard” available in the Settings app. Users can choose one of three options –

Use Windows Backup to synchronize your settings to the cloud (no additional cost) 1,000 Microsoft Rewards Points (no additional cost) (no additional cost) $30 (local pricing may change)

When the appropriate option is selected, the user’s PC will be automatically registered with the program. ESU coverage for Windows 10 devices runs from October 15, 2025 to October 13, 2026.

The Registration Wizard is currently available in the Windows Insider program and is scheduled to be deployed to Windows 10 customers in July, with availability expanding in mid-August.

Cybersecurity

It is worth noting that ESUS does not cover new features, non-security updates, or design change requests. Another important aspect to consider is that to use Microsoft Rewards or Windows Backup, if the user is not already in his Microsoft account, he must sign up for a Microsoft account.

“After support ends on October 14, 2025, individuals or organizations who choose to continue using Windows 10 have the option to register their PCs for a paid ESU subscription,” Microsoft said.

“The ESU program allows PCs to continue receiving important and critical security updates through their annual subscription service after support is terminated.”
