In a groundbreaking move towards the UK’s clean energy future, Scotland’s Secretary Ian Murray has turned on full power at Ocean Winds’ new Moray West Wind Farm.

Located 13 miles from Bucky’s coast, Moray West Wind Farm is one of Scotland’s largest offshore wind farms.

It produces up to 882MW of production, half of Scottish households.

At full power, sea breezes will become Scotland’s largest offshore wind operator, running two wind farms off the northeast coast, developing a third.

Grow the economy with offshore wind

Clean energy represents economic opportunities in the 21st century, with the Moray West project alone creating approximately 1,500 jobs during the construction phase.

Developer Ocean Winds has used over 80 UK suppliers in its projects so far. It still had the largest turbines installed in British waters, reaching 257m above sea level.

Ian Murray said: “Investments like those made by sea breezes are absolutely central to ensure Scotland and its workers benefit from the skilled work and economic growth that clean energy brings.

“With British energy in Aberdeen and billions of pounds of investment in the table, Scotland is at the heart of the UK government’s willingness to make the UK a clean energy superpower.”

The role of Moray West Wind Farm in the clean energy transition

Moray West Wind Farm is one step closer to the UK government to achieve its 43-50GW offshore wind target set for 2030, helping to realize its mission to make the UK a clean energy superpower, as listed in the Clean Power Action Plan.

During his visit to the sea breeze, Murray met staff who had moved to renewable energy after a career in the oil and gas industry and the British military.

“Offshorewinds are the backbone of clean power plans by 2030, as the UK is blessed with thousands of miles of coastline,” explained Energy Secretary Ed Miliband.

“Developments like Moray West will take you a step closer to getting off a fossil fuel roller coaster, helping you implement change plans, protecting households from unstable gas prices and creating good jobs.”

Connecting countries to promote energy security

After switching Moray West Wind Farm, the Scottish secretary traveled to Aberdeen to visit Surrence PSG and ETZ Ltd.

Sarens PSG was involved in the construction of the Moray West Wind Farm and marshaled 62 giants, “Monopiles,” The Wind Turbine Foundations.

Meanwhile, Sarens PSG has opened a new £1.6 million training facility for wind farm workers. The company recently opened the facility, saying its British Energy headquarters in Aberdeen has become an ideal location for the facility.

Touring the Energy Transition Zone, Murray visited the UK’s first dedicated facility, the Floating Wind Innovation Center, for floating wind technology run by Ore Catapult.

These visits are made against the background of the UK government, which co-hosted the International Energy Agency Summit in London.
