Murena, a French privacy company whose forks Android to deliver so-called Degoodled smartphones, has repeated the tricks on the tablet. So, if you’re looking to get a shiny pixel tablet, but without the regular bundle of Google apps and services, Murena has it.

The Murena Pixel tablet runs the /e/OS open source operating system, not Google’s Android flavor. Therefore, the promise of a “privacy-focused Android experience” with the device’s 10.95-inch LCD display.

“If you don’t have Google services that minimize data tracking, have a safer experience and collect personal information, you’ll enjoy all the performance and versatility you need,” Murena writes. It says that the tablet has been added to the selection of hardware that will be resold with /e /OS installed according to “critical demand”.

The pixel tablet comes with 128 GB of internal storage and 8 GB of RAM, available for purchase from Murena’s online store for 539 euros (or $549 in the US).

If you are degugged, the Google Play Store itself cannot be found on your device. Instead, /e/OS offers an app marketplace called App Lounge, where users can download apps available “anonymously” on Google Play and F-Droid, but to access paid apps, Google You must sign in to your account. (See previous E/OS reviews for more information about the trade-offs that come with Murena’s App Store workarounds.)

Reproducing the full app marketplace experience without a link to Google is clearly a difficult issue, but Murena has been busy building privacy-focused alternatives for standalone apps such as Google Drive and Office 365. Masu. The office suite, known as File Storage, Backups, and Workspaces, offers up to 1 GB of storage for free, followed by a paid plan.
