Nintendo announced new details on Wednesday about the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 Gaming Console, which will become the company’s first new console since the Nintendo Switch was introduced in 2017.
Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on June 5th.
As the name suggests, Switch 2 is an upgrade to the Nintendo Switch. Based on the Switch’s existing design, it can be played on the go and at home on the TV screen.
Initially, Nintendo has already confirmed that a new exclusive Mario Kart game will be released on the same day as Switch 2, known as Mario Kart World.
Mario Kart World appears to be an interpretation of Nintendo’s open world Mario game. There are large maps of different regions and courses, but in Free Drive mode you can run around anywhere without the threat of a red shell lurking in the corner.
What will the Nintendo Switch 2 look like?
The Switch 2 has a larger console with a larger screen (it still has a bezel on the edge) and a Haftier Joy-Con controller that also magnetically adheres to the sides of the screen. The device has a 1080p LCD screen and HDR that supports up to 120FPS. This can be a disappointment for users who are used to the upgraded OLED Nintendo Switch. However, the dock supports 4K.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of storage, which is eight times more storage than the previous model, and even casual gamers had to buy a MicroousB chip to get more storage. The Nintendo Switch 2 only supports MicroSD Express cards for additional storage, a new kind of MicroSD vehicle.
On the back of the device is a sturdy stand to keep the device upright. The body has USB-C charging ports at the top and bottom of the device. The top seems to be intended for Nintendo Switch cameras, but it’s also a better-positioned charging port.
The classic colorway of the Nintendo Switch 2 is matte black with bright red and blue accents on each Joy-Con, which nods to the previous design, but in a refined format. But Nintendo is happy to bet that you can buy as much joy as you want in every colour you can imagine. And this time there is no drift issue.
The Joy-Cons also acts like a computer mouse for compatible games. The gyroscope feature gives players more control over motion control.
To make users familiar with the new Nintendo Switch 2 features, there is a welcome tour game that explains the device and costs money.
What is the C button on the Nintendo Switch 2?
Many fans theorized about the C button that appears in the Joy-Cons. This confirmed that Nintendo is GameChat today. This allows you to communicate with friends while you’re playing the game.
Your voice is recognized by the microphone in the system. Users can also share game screens within the console, even if they are playing a variety of games. However, even in the demo, footage from other players’ game screens appears to be a little choppy.
The Joy-Con on the right has another C button that can be used for other chat functions.
GameChat is available to all users until March 31, 2026, but you will need a paid online membership to use it. Nintendo simply stated that Parental Control is accessible via GameChat, but did not provide details.
What other hardware does Nintendo Switch 2 boot?
Nintendo has announced a Nintendo Switch camera that can connect to a console and transpose faces over games.
Nintendo offers an example of a camera where people play a Mario party together, with the player’s face appearing in a speech bubble next to the character, showing their reaction to the game. These new features are backwards compatible in certain games, including the Mario Party’s Jamboree.
Of course, there is also a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller with a new C button.
