Openai plans to develop a dedicated AI device designed to replace smartphones. In an interview on Sunday, CEO’s Sam Altman confirmed that the company is working on AI -specific hardware that can redefine the interact with technology.

“Openai is aiming for the development of artificial intelligence -specific devices. This is a movement that could cause high -tech hardware since the launch of the iPhone in 2007,” he said on Sunday.

Talking to Japan’s Nihon Kiza Simbun, Altman said that Openai has developed a dedicated AI device. He suggested a partnership with Jony Ive, a former Apple design chief, and realized the concept.

“We want to do it with a partnership,” Altuman told Nikkei on January 27. He is currently in Japan and will meet Prime Minister Is Viva on Monday.

This will be a report from September 2024 that Openai has cooperated with IVE and Laurene Powell’s work on a secret AI device. If the project progresses, it will be the most important venture in IVE technology since leaving Apple.

Altman continued, added, “Because AI needs a new device, because the computers change the way they exchange from zero,” and added that “sound (operation) is the key.”

He said that China’s progress in AI has narrowed the gap with the United States. Speaking of Chinese AI’s startup Deepseek, he said that China’s ability was “catching up with the United States.”

Altman also raises concerns about AI’s potential misuse, and if China and other countries have the initiative in development, “authoritative countries can abuse AI and strengthen the system.” I warned.

Is Openai’s new AI device the future of smartphones?

According to Nihon Keizai SHIMBUN, Openai is planning not only on this AI device but also to develop its own semiconductor. This suggests that the company is considering optimizing both hardware and software for AI -driven experience.

Altman believes that AI requires different types of interfaces. An interface that moves beyond the touch screen. “AI needs a new device to change the way people interact with a computer from zero,” he said. “The voice is the key.”

Apple has revolutionized how to interact with the device by using the touch screen as standard. Openai seems to take another route with the aim of establishing audio as a major input method of AI -drive -type interaction.

Openai, on the other hand, has joined the SoftBank Group and Oracle in AI Stargate Initiative, and has announced the $ 500 billion effort announced last month.

Altman also focused on the world’s AI landscape and pointed to China’s progress. He warned that Chinese AI Startup DIPSYK said that it was “catching up with the United States significantly,” and that the authority government could exploit AI for military purposes and control.

Why is this important? Openai has already integrated ChatGpt to iPhone 16 in cooperation with Apple, but Altman and Ive’s independent projects may reconstruct AI use. If the combined vision is shaped, it may be a hardware that seamlessly blend AI in everyday life.
