Openai is reportedly having a debate on buying Windsurf, an AI coding startup previously known as Codeium, for around $3 billion, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the deal. If the deal is made, it will still be the company’s biggest acquisition.
Openai gives a speech to buy Windsurf for around $3 billion
This move shows how serious Openai is about growing beyond ChatGpt and guiding deeper developer-focused tools. Windsurf is gaining momentum in its space and offers an AI-assisted coding experience that has attracted the attention of engineers and large companies.
“This deal is the largest open acquisition ever and will help us compete in the market for AI-driven coding assistants,” reported Bloomberg.
Windsurf raised funding in a round led by General Catalyst in 2023, pinning its valuation at $1.25 billion. Overall, the startup raised over $200 million in venture capital.
This deal could give Openai an edge, as it appears to compete with other players in AI coding assistants, like Microsoft’s Github Copilot. More than that, it can bring a customer base that fits neatly into the broader strategy of experience, high-tech stacks, and openness.
Neither Openai nor Windsurf commented on the potential acquisition.
