Red arrows make history on first flight using sustainable fuel

The world’s first fly-pust using a more sustainable fuel combination was done by London’s red arrows.

The Royal Air Force’s aerobatic team jets were equipped with a high-ratio blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to provide an exciting finale at a big event performed for the king’s majesty.

Flypast also produces unique trademark steam media, the world’s first anywhere, switching to both a sustainable fuel blend for propulsion and a renewable biofuel known as Hydrotrier Plant Vegetable Oil (HVO).

Following groundbreaking testing by RAF engineers and logisticians, this is the first time the team has flew on sustainable fuel at a public event.

Air Vice-Marshal Shaun Harris, Director Support at RAF, explained:

“As the red arrows indicate, RAF is adapted to allow them to continue flying and fighting globally, using any fuel source, as these alternatives become more common.”

Increased profits from sustainable fuels

SAFs are usually made from waste-based low-carbon raw materials. This sustainable option reduces lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% on average compared to traditional jet fuels.

HVO is a premium hydrocarbon-based fuel product made from 100% renewable raw materials, with a chemical structure similar to the regular diesel traditionally used by the Aerobatic Team due to its steam traces.

Determined against this standard, diesel HVO reduces emissions by up to 90% over the entire lifespan.

Commitment to reduce RAF’s carbon footprint

In addition to reducing carbon footprint, the move demonstrates RAF’s commitment to new technologies, indicating that it will no longer rely on fossil fuels in the energy sector.

“The Red Arrows Senior Engineering Officer and Squadron Leader who led the pioneering fuel project,” said Andy King, the Squadron’s Senior Engineering Officer, who led the pioneering fuel project.

RAF is working with sustainable fuels to power current and future aircraft. This reduces dependence on the global fossil fuel supply chain, improves energy security and increases operational resilience.

There are also environmental benefits to switching to these alternative fuels, such as reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions.

King concluded:

“The team is looking to explore further opportunities to use this innovation in other events.”
